Baseball Drops Game Against Haverford

Game time tomorrow changed to 12 p.m. ET

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team fell to Haverford College, 13-10, Wednesday, March 12. The Titans dip to 4-5 on the season while the Fords climb to 6-3 this year.

Illinois Wesleyan cranked out 10 hits, but Haverford notched 18 in an offensive battle. Three Titans churned out multi-hit games, with Gage Wolfe (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, and a run scored. Senior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) posted a 2-for-6 showing with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) drove in three as part of a 2-for-3 day at the plate. Gurgone also walked twice. In addition to Gurgone and Tomhave, Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) and Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) also recorded doubles in the loss.

The Green and White used four pitchers on the mound, with junior Will Davidsmeier (Virginia, Ill.-Beardstown) earning the start and a no-decision after 5.0 innings. He struck out seven and walked one, while giving up six runs on seven hits. Freshman Cole Benson (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) threw 1.2 innings and was sacked with the loss. Freshman Micheal Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) and sophomore Marshall Ingold (Rochester, Ill.-Rochester) also pitched.

After spotting the Fords a 3-0 lead in the first inning, the Titans scored in the second and third to knot the score at three. In the bottom of the second, Haverford struckout the side, but not before four walks brought home Woltman to cut the deficit to two, 3-1. Wolfe drew the bases-loaded free pass with one out, before back-to-back strikeouts left bases loaded.

Senior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) started off the bottom of the third inning with a hit to left field and advanced to second on a balk. On the next pitch, Tomhave cracked one into right field to advance Gadomski to third. A steal put runners on second and third with nobody out, where Woltman put a ball in play to the right side of the infield to score Gadomski. Senior Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) followed with a two-bagger down the left line to run Tomhave in, tying the game, 3-3.

Haverford reclaimed the lead with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth as the Titans trailed, 6-3 into the bottom of the sixth.

IWU got three runs back on two hits and three errors in the bottom of the sixth. With two on, both via error, and two outs, Woltman and J. Gurgone whacked back-to-back doubles to tie the game, 6-6, into the seventh.

Haverford came right back with a six-run seventh to double up Illinois Wesleyan, 12-6.

Flagg and Wolfe kicked off the inning with singles and sophomore Jack Novak (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Gadomski was plunked, bringing home Flagg, and Tomhave followed with a two-run single to right. Woltman capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly, pulling IWU within two, 12-10.

Haverford tacked on an insurance run in the eighth and Illinois Wesleyan mustered just two baserunners over its final two trips to the plate, falling 13-10.

Game time was changed for tomorrow's game so IWU will take on Skidmore College, Thursday, March 12 at 12 p.m. ET at Terry Park, Field 4. Links to the live stream and the live stats can be found on the baseball schedule page of iwusports.com.
