Baseball Overpowers Baruch in Fort Myers

Game two cancelled due to rain delay

FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team solidified its fourth win of the season Monday, March 10, defeating Baruch College, 20-3. The victory boosts IWU's record to 4-4 and sent BC to a 1-8 record. Due to the rain delay in game one, the Titans and the Bearcats decided that game two will be cancelled.

The Titans went up early in the top of the first, as the top of the lineup all reached base. Senior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) started the game off with a base hit to right center followed by another base hit from fellow senior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg). Senior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) bunted to get himself on base, and an error from the Bearcats' first baseman brought Figus and Gadomski home to put IWU up early, 2-0.

Continuing in the first, senior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) was hit by a pitch to take his base and put C. Tomhave at second. Both Woltman and C. Tomhave stole bases while senior Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) was up to bat. The Titans utilized the smart baserunning to their advantage, as Gurgone shot one straight into left field to bring the senior duo home one pitch later.

Sophomore John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) slammed one into left center on the next at bat to give Gurgone plenty of time to touch home plate.

Junior Gage Wolfe (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) slapped one to center field to reach base, refreshing the IWU lineup. Figus reached base with a walk, loading the bases. Seizing another scoring opportunity, Gadomski sent one over the center fielder's head for a triple to send all three on base home, bringing the score to 8-0, Titans.

The last run of the inning came from C. Tomhave hitting a triple to send Gadomski home ending the inning, 9-0.

The Titans scored three more in the top of the third to extend the lead to 12-0. Gadomski, C. Tomhave, and Woltman all got on base to put IWU into a one out, bases loaded situation. Gadomaksi ran in on a wild pitch to give the Titans one more run. Gurgone hit a sacrifice fly to left field for C. Tomhave to score and Ferraro singled to right field to run Woltman in to finish out the scoring in the third inning.

The top of the fourth saw Illinois Wesleyan make some changes to the lineup but kept the scoring alive. Sophomore Jack Novak (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) started the inning with a double to left field. Senior William Duff (Western Springs, Ill.-St. Ignatius) took his base on a walk to move Novak to second. Gadomski followed with a double to left center, sending both Novak and Duff home. The highlight of the game came from senior Casey Swanson (Minooka, Ill.-Minooka). With Gadomski on base, Swanson came in to pinch hit and slammed a homer past the right field fences for a two-run home run, the first of the season for Swanson. IWU ended the inning ahead 16-0, going into the bottom of the fourth.

A long weather delay in the bottom of the fifth did not stop IWU, as the Titans added three more runs to end the game in seven innings. Flagg hit a two-bagger to continue IWU's hot hitting in the top of the seventh. Freshman Derek Ittner (Bloomingdale, Ill.-Lake Park) came in to pinch hit and smacked a double down the right field line, garnering his first collegiate hit. With Novak up to bat, the Titans' centerfielder put one over the fences to round the bases and grab his first home run of the season and of his collegiate career. The Titans ended the game in the seventh, 20-3.

Senior Dalen Banks (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) recorded the win for the Titans on the mound, moving his record to 1-0. Banks recorded six strikeouts in four innings of work. IWU saw freshman Brennan Tomhave's (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) first collegiate appearance as the relief pitcher, along with sophomore Caleb Martinez (Wheeling, Ill.-Wheeling), and juniors Luke Costello (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) and Will Davidsmeier (Virginia, Ill.-Beardstown).

Gadomski finished the game going five-for-five, claiming four runs and five runs batted in. Ferraro was three-for-three on the day with two RBI and one run.

Illinois Wesleyan will enjoy a day off tomorrow before taking on Haverford College, Wednesday, March 12 at 12 p.m. ET. IWU will continue to play at Terry Park Stadium for the game against Haverford.
