Titans Stumble to Bears in Doubleheader

IWU looks for redemption tomorrow

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team dropped both games in its doubleheader with Washington University in St. Louis March 1, at Kelly Field. The Titans' 3-2, and 8-3 losses to the Bears drop the Green and White's record to 2-3 on the young season while WashU jumps to a perfect 5-0.

Game One: Titans 2, Bears 3

The first game of the two-game stint remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning when Illinois Wesleyan struck first. Sophomore John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) hit a solo home run past the right field fences to put the Titans up 1-0 over the Bears.

Just an inning and a half later, WashU brought one home to even out the score, 1-1 at the bottom of the fifth.

The top of the seventh saw another run come in for Illinois Wesleyan starting with senior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) taking first on a walk. Fellow senior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) hit a sacrifice bunt to advance Woltman to second. Junior Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) grounded out to second base but gave Woltman a chance to advance to third before a WashU error in left field resulted in Woltman scoring a run to give the Titans a 2-1 lead.

The Titans kept the lead until the bottom of the ninth when WashU managed two more runs to end the game 3-2.

IWU finished with 28 at bats to WashU's 33 and trailed with three hits to the Bears 11.

Game Two: Titans 3, Bears 8

Neither team saw a run until the bottom of the fourth when WashU struck first, scoring six runs on five hits.

The Bears extended their lead to 7-0 before the Titans utilized a strong seventh inning to try and cut into the WashU lead.

IWU got on base with senior Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) notching a single to left field, followed by a failed pick off attempt and an error by the pitcher to advance to third. Woltman hit a sacrifice fly to bring Gurgone home to get IWU on the board trailing 7-1.

Freshman Ben Ford (Naperville, Ill.-Waubonsie Valley) and Figus continued the Titans' momentum in the seventh, as Figus reached on an error before Ford singled through the left side. Sophomore Luca Morelli (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Adlai A. Stevenson) was walked to have bases loaded as junior Gage Wolfe (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) cranked a two RBI single up the middle to bring in Ford and Figus, cutting the score gap to four, 7-3, to finish the inning.

The Bears scored one more run in the eighth inning to bring the score to 8-3, in what would ultimately be the final.

IWU accumulated six hits to WashU's 13 while seeing four less at bats (36-32).

The Titans will take on one more game against the Bears tomorrow, March 2 to close out the series. The 12 p.m. game will be played at Kelly Field in St. Louis, Mo.
