Baseball Bounces Back with Win in Series Finale at WashU

Titans travel to Florida for spring break

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team finished its series with Washington University of St. Louis with a 4-1 win Sunday, March 2. The Titans climbed to 3-3 on the season and avoided a sweep with the win, while handing WashU (5-1) its first loss.

The Green and White dominated statistically with an 11-3 lead in hits. Senior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) led the way with a 3-for-4 day at the plate that included two runs scored and an RBI. Freshmen Ben Ford (Naperville, Ill.-Waubonsie Valley) and Matt Hudik (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) notched two hits each, while Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) topped the team with two RBIs.

Junior Jake Pullam (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) earned the win on the mound, pushing his record to 2-0 on the season. He went six innings with four strikeouts, while limiting the Bears to two hits. Caleb Martinez (Wheeling, Ill.-Wheeling) and Luke Costello (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) threw scoreless innings in relief. Martinez tossed the seventh frame and Costello closed out the game with two hitless innings to earn the save.

WashU climbed ahead, 1-0, in the second inning without recording a hit. The leadoff batter reached via a hit by pitch and a sacrifice bunt put a runner on third, where the Bears used a sacrifice fly to take the lead.

Illinois Wesleyan broke through for a run in the sixth to knot the game at one. Tomhave cracked the inning open with a single to right and scooted into second on a wild pitch. After senior Jimmy Gurgone's (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) single to left put runners on the corners with one out, junior Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) put a ball in play to drive home Tomhave and tie the score.

The Titans pounced for two more runs in the seventh to take a 3-1 lead into the stretch. Hudik singled on a bunt towards third base, and with a walk from junior Gage Wolfe (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) moved to second. Senior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) bunted to the pitcher to secure a bases loaded situation and set the table for Tomhave. The senior smashed an RBI single to right center to bring Hudik home and put the Titans up 2-1.  On the next at-bat, Woltman hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Wolfe as the Green and White a two run lead into the seventh-inning stretch.

The top of the ninth saw another Titan run to extend the lead to 4-1. Tomhave got on base with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Woltman smacked a double down the left line to send Tomhave home and extend the lead to three.

A quick 1-2-3 in the bottom of the ninth from Costello closed out the win.

The Titans have a six-game tournament down in Fort Myers, Fla., March 9-14 before playing its first home game of the season against Principia College, March 18.
