Men’s Tennis Gears Up for Saturday Duel Against Greenville

First serve scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Coming off its second consecutive win of the season last weekend, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team will host Greenville University Saturday, March. 1. Action is set to begin inside Evergreen Racquet Club at 4:00 p.m.

The Titans (2-4) enter Saturday after defeating Webster University, 5-2, Saturday night, Feb. 15. It marks the sixth consecutive win against the Gorlocks in the eight-match series.

The match saw IWU sweep through doubles action to claim the one-point decision. Juniors Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wy.-Phillips Exeter Academy) took the top spot, 6-2, while fifth-year Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) and sophomore Thad Dillow (Effingham, Ill.-Effingham) won at No. 2 doubles, 6-4. 

Junior Griffin Hammond (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) and sophomore Chase Tomecki (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) secured the sweep with a 6-0 decision in the third slot. 

On the individual side the Green and White continued its dominance with Turnbull garnering the win for the No. 1 singles crown. Vigneri and McCoy followed suit and won the No. 2 and No. 3 spots respectively. Rounding out the singles action was Tomecki who closed out the contest with a win at No. 6 singles. 

The Titans will take on Greenville (7-3) for the 11th time, with the series dating back to 2015. Greenville owns the 8-2 advantage against the Titans, including the most recent meeting March. 2, 2024. The Green and White walked away with a 3-6 defeat, marking the third consecutive loss against the Panthers. GU comes to town off a 6-1 win over Albion College, Saturday, Feb. 22.
