Baseball Takes Down Greenville

Titans move to 2-1 on the young season

GREENVILLE, Ill. - Finishing up its three-game series, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team defeated Greenville University Monday, Feb. 24 at Robert E. Smith Field. IWU moves to 2-1 on the season while Greenville 2-3 on the young season.

The Titans jumped on the scoreboard early with sophomore Jack Novak (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way Central) singling on the first at bat of the game. Advancing to second on a passed ball and to third from a fly out to right field, senior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) sent a line drive out to centerfield sacrificing the out, but sending Novak in to score, putting the Titans up 1-0 early in the game.

Greenville answered back quickly as they were able to score in the bottom of the first tying the game at 1-1.

Not letting up, the IWU took a chance at another early score. Junior Tommy Willard (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) went around the diamond, taking a walk to start him off, and then advancing to second on a passed ball. With a bobbled ball from the Panthers third baseman, Willard ran home putting the Titans back up against GU, 2-1.

The Panthers scored one more run in the bottom of the second, to tie it up again at twos.

The Green and White continued its scoring streak in the top of the third, Tomhave got on base with a single into left field. Senior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) singled to left as well, advancing Tomhave to second. A walk from senior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) found the bases loaded with only one out. Greenville walked junior Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest), earning the Titans another run to push the visitors ahead, 3-2.

The top of the third continued with a single from senior Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence), which allowed Figus and Woltman to tap home plate, adding two more to the Titans' total score. A wild pitch on the next batter meant that Flagg had room to score and slid home for IWU's fourth run in the third, bringing the score to 6-2.

The Titans were relentless, though, as they scored three more in the top of the fourth after seeing no runs from the Panthers in the third. Figus, Woltman, and sophomore John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest), all got on base for another bases loaded, one out situation. Flagg hit the ball down the right line, giving all three runners the opportunity to run home, increasing the gap to 9-2.

Illinois Wesleyan finished the day off with one more run in the top of the fifth, getting Willard around the bases, once again. Willard and Novak walked, and Tomhave advanced to first on a hit-by-pitch with bases loaded. Ferraro reached on fielder's choice, bringing Willard in for another run, ending the Titans five inning scoring streak.

The Green and White led the Panther 10-2 into the bottom of the seventh where IWU allowed two more runs to end the score at 10-4.

Junior Jake Pullam (Palatine, Ill.-Palatine) pitched for four innings and earned the win, opening his season record at 1-0, while totaling two strikeouts. Sophomore Caleb Martinez (Wheeling, Ill.-Wheeling) threw three innings, striking out four and walking two. Freshman Cole Benson (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) made his collegiate debut, pitching the last two innings where he struck out three and allowed one hit.

Illinois Wesleyan finished out the game leading with nine hits to the Panthers' seven, doing so with just one more at bat than GU (34-33). Each team had one error for the duration of the game.

The Titans are back on the road to compete in a three-game series with Washington University in St. Louis, Saturday-Sunday, Feb.28-Mar. 1. Games will be played at Kelly Field with a double header starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, and then a 12 p.m. game Sunday to finish out the series.
