Men’s Volleyball Falls to NCC in CCIW Opener

Titans host No. 5 Carthage Saturday, Feb. 22

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Continuing its run of games against nationally-ranked opposition, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team began College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play with a three-set loss to No. 18 North Central College Tuesday night, Feb. 18, inside the Shirk Center. The Titans (10-5, 0-1 CCIW) fell to the Cardinals (8-3, 1-0 CCIW) by set scores of 25-18, 25-14, and 25-9 in the league opener.

Sophomore Bryce Williams (Chicago, Ill.-Whitney M. Young) led the Titans with six kills while hitting .267. Fellow sophomore Brenden Reutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) added five kills along with team-highs of eight assists and eight digs. Williams was second on the team with five digs. Senior Vince DiCosola (Aurora, Ill.-Oswego East) contributed seven assists and four digs, while freshman Gavin Rohlwing (Tower Lake, Ill.-Barrington) led the team with two blocks.

As a team, the Titans struggled to find an offensive rhythm as the Green and White were held to 20 kills on a -.027 attack percentage, while the Cardinals totaled 40 kills on a .436 clip. North Central recorded leads in blocks (7-3) and aces (5-0). Each team tallied 27 digs.

Illinois Wesleyan leveled the opening set at five all with a Rohlwing smash, but North Central used a run to pull ahead, 12-9. Out of an IWU timeout, the Titans got the sideout on a Cardinals service error. The Green and White followed with four straight points as DiCosola set senior Ryan Myers (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Stevenson) for a kill before Rohlwing and Williams notched points. NCC's hitting error drew the set even, 14-14.

The Titans ran out of steam though, as the Cardinals closed on a 10-3 run to take the set, 25-18.

Similar to the first set, the second was tight in the early goings before NCC pulled away for a 25-14 win to take a two sets to none lead in the match.

In the third, Illinois Wesleyan fell behind 8-2 and could not overcome the deficit, falling 25-9.

Illinois Wesleyan hosts fifth-ranked Carthage College this Saturday, Feb. 22, as CCIW play continues. First serve is set for 3 p.m. inside the Shirk Center.
