Men’s Volleyball Swept by No. 5 Firebirds

Titans travel to North Park Wednesday, Feb. 26

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's volleyball team dropped a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin battle with fifth-ranked Carthage College Saturday afternoon, Feb. 22, inside the Shirk Center. The Titans fall to 10-6 overall, and 0-2 in league play while the Firebirds move to 11-2, and 1-0 in the CCIW via set scores of 25-13, 25-17, and 25-18.

Illinois Wesleyan hit .147 for the match, but could not find an answer for the Firebirds, who hit at a .500 clip. The Titans finished with 27 kills, 24 digs, and two blocks, while CC tallied 44 kills, 27 digs, and three rejections.

Freshman Gavin Rohlwing (Tower Lake, Ill.-Barrington) led the Titans with eight kills on a strong .583 attacking percentage. Sophomore Bryce Williams (Chicago, Ill.-Whitney M. Young) added six kills and freshman Trey Marek (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) tallied five. Sophomore Brendan Reutter (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) paced IWU with 18 assists and tied Williams, junior Jace Milka (Bolingbrook, Ill.-Plainfield East) and freshman Ben Zima (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) for the team lead with four digs.

After dropping the first two sets, Illinois Wesleyan found a bit of a rhythm in the third as the Green and White hit .318 for the set. With Carthage leading 6-4, IWU capitalized on a Firebirds service error as the miscue kicked off a three-point Titan run. Freshman Ethan Kuziela (Chicago, Ill.-Marist) smashed a kill to level the set at six and a Carthage error pushed Illinois Wesleyan ahead, 7-6.

Rohlwing broke an 8-8 tie with a kill from Reutter's assist before Williams' kill maintained a one-point edge, 10-9. An Illinois Wesleyan error made way for a three-point run by Carthage as the nationally-ranked Firebirds climbed in front, 12-10, before expanding the lead to 16-11.

The Titans staved off match point three times, but ultimately fell 25-18 on a service error.

Illinois Wesleyan hits the road to Chicago, Ill. for its next CCIW matchup, as the Titans face North Park University Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. at North Park Gymnasium.
