Men’s Tennis Secures Win Over Webster

Titans defeat Gorloks 5-2

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team defeated Webster University, 5-2, Saturday night, Feb. 15 at Evergreen Racquet Club. The win boosts the Titans to 2-3 overall, while Webster slips to 2-4.

IWU swept through doubles action to claim the one-point decision. Juniors Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wy.-Phillips Exeter Academy) took the top spot, 6-2, while fifth-year Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) and sophomore Thad Dillow (Effingham, Ill.-Effingham) won at No. 2 doubles, 6-4. Junior Griffin Hammond (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) and sophomore Chase Tomecki (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) secured the sweep with a 6-0 decision in the third slot.

In individuals action, Turnbull gutted out a win to claim the No. 1 singles crown. Opening with a 6-3 set win, Turnbull fell by the same score in the second to force a super tiebreaker set. Needing extra time to claim the win, the junior took the final set, 14-12. Vigneri and McCoy locked in wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively. The Casper, Wyo. native took his sets 6-4, 6-2, while McCoy notched his win with set scores of 6-0, 6-3. Tomecki closed out the contest with a win at No. 6 singles, taking his sets 6-4, 6-1.

The Titans remain home and will host Greenville University and Central College for a weekend of action Saturday-Sunday, March 1-2. IWU will take on Greenville at 3:45 p.m. Saturday, March 1, before hosting Central Sunday, March 2, for a 12:15 p.m. contest.
