Women’s Hoops Cruises Past North Park

Titans jump to 21-1, 12-1 in CCIW play

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Bouncing back from its first loss of the season in a big way, the fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team dominated North Park University, 99-42, Tuesday night, Feb. 11, inside the Shirk Center. IWU climed to 21-1 and 12-1 in league play with the win, while NPU dipped to 3-20 (0-14 CCIW).

Fourteen different Titans scored in the win, with junior Ava Bardic (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) with 17 points. Senior Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) tallied 12 points, with senior Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) added 11 points. Playing just 11 minutes, senior Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) went for eight points and a team-high eight rebounds. Junior Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) led the tam with six assists and a team-high four steals, while adding seven points and four boards.

Illinois Wesleyan was red-hot from the floor, shooting 55.1 percent on the night (38-of-69). The Titans went 7-for-25 from distance and 16-for-20 at the free throw line. The Green and White defense limited NPU to 27.3 percent shooting (15-for-55) overall. IWU held North Park to 4-for-20 three-point shooting and converted just 8-for-15 from beyond the arc.

In a dominating performance, Illinois Wesleyan finished with leads in points off turnovers (48-13), second-chance scoring (14-6), bench points (46-21), points in the paint (56-16), fastbreak scoring (24-2), and rebounding (46-28).

The Vikings led 3-2 after a free throw and a jumper a minute and a half in but never lead again as Knutson hit a layup and Bardic drilled a three-ball. Palmer followed with free throws , before a three-point play by Bardic and jumper from Knutson put IWU ahead, 14-5.

After a bucket by NPU broke up the run, Illinois Wesleyan rattled off five straight points. Knutson delivered a pass over the top to Palmer cutting down the lane for a bucket to extend the lead to 20-15 with 2:12 to go in the first quarter.

Junior Martha Lipic (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) made a layup a minute later as IWU closed out the period with a six-point spurt.

The Titans began the second-period with a swipe and score as Palmer fed Huber for a bucket to extend the lead to 20.  A tip-in by Huber stretched the Titan advantage to 30 into a NPU timeout with 4:06 to play in the half.

The Green and White closed out the half with a buzzer-beater as Balli kicked to White for a three-pointer. The triple put IWU up, 57-19, into the half.

Illinois Wesleyan never looked back as White dished to Powers for a three-ball to up the advantage to 40 in the third quarter. Freshman Luigi Lam (Kowloon, Hong Kong-Wa Ying College) closed out the scoring with a triple off an assist from freshman Alyssa Epps (Berkeley, Ill.-Montini Catholic).

The Titans close out the home portion of the regular season this Saturday, Feb. 15, against Millikin University. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. inside the Shirk Center with Illinois Wesleyan set to recognize seniors Lauren Huber, Caite Knutson, Mallory Powers, and Kate Palmer as part of Senior Day.
