Women’s Hoops Clinches CCIW Regular Season Title with Blowout of Big Blue

Titans will host final rounds of the CCIW Tournament, Feb. 28-March 1

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The fourth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University women's basketball team made it a Senior Day to remember Saturday afternoon, Feb. 15, inside the Shirk Center as the Titans guaranteed themselves at least a share of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Regular Season Championship with an 83-52 win over Millikin University. With the win, the Titans boosted their record to 22-1 overall and 13-1 in CCIW play. The Big Blue dipped to 8-15 on the year and now sit level at 7-7 in conference competition.

Seniors showed out for the Titans in the win, with Mallory Powers (Amboy, Ill.-Amboy) scoring a game-high 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc. The Amboy, Ill. native added a team-high seven assists with five rebounds and a steal with a good chunk of her hometown on hand. Lauren Huber (Lombard, Ill.-Glenbard East) scored 17 points and pulled in a team-high nine rebounds, while tying for the team lead with three steals. Caite Knutson (Maryville, Ill.-Collinsville) added 12 points and five boards on 5-of-6 shooting, while Kate Palmer (Geneva, Ill.-Geneva) tallied seven points and three assists. Junior Sawyer White (Downers Grove, Ill.-Montini Catholic) finished with 11 points, six caroms, and two assists.

Illinois Wesleyan connected on 31-of-66 shot attempts for the game (47 percent) and went 9-for-25 from beyond the arc (36 percent). The Titans converted 12-of-14 free throws. Millikin was held in check offensively, as the Big Blue finished just 20-for-65 from the field (30.8 percent) and 6-for-26 from three-point distance (23.1 percent). MU made all six of its free throw attempts.

The Green and White posted leads in points off turnovers (21-13), points in the paint (40-28), second-chance scoring (12-10), and fastbreak scoring (17-2). Millikin held a slim edge in bench scoring, 28-27.

A 30-2 run spanning the final five minutes of the first quarter and first five minutes of the second quarter allowed the Titans to seize control.

Leading 14-10 out of the game's first media timeout, a bucket by Knutson was followed by a signature swipe and score from White. Knutson then hit Powers on a kickout for a triple before Powers returned the favor with a feed into the post. Knutson closed out the first-quarter scoring with a turnaround putback to stretch the lead to 30-10 after 10 minutes of play.

Illinois Wesleyan showed no signs of slowing down in the second as the blitz continued. A Huber and-one started the period's scoring and a skip pass from junior Ava Bardic (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) to White for a three-pointer forced a Millikin timeout. The pause in action came with Illinois Wesleyan's lead up to 36-10 at the 8:35 mark.

Out of the timeout, Powers drilled back-to-back three-pointers as the lead grew, 44-10. The Big Blue managed to break the scoring drought, which lasted more than 10 minutes, with a bucket, but was limited to just six points in the period.

Leading 54-16 out of halftime, the Green and White extended its stronghold to as many as 47 points in the third quarter.

Illinois Wesleyan finishes out the final two games of the regular season on the road beginning Wednesday, Feb. 19, at North Central College. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. inside Gregory Arena.
