Women’s Soccer Tripped Up by Firebirds

Titans look ahead to mid-week matchup at Wheaton

KENOSHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team fell, 7-2, in its first game of College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play at Carthage College Saturday, Oct. 4. Illinois Wesleyan falls to 5-5-1 (0-1 CCIW) on the season, while Carthage improves to 6-4-2 (2-0 CCIW).

Carthage led the Titans in shots (23-13) and shots on target (15-9). Sophomore Vanessa Gray (Burlington, Ontario, Canada-Dr. Frank J. Hayden) found her way back between the pipes recording eight saves, one shy of a career-best.

In the 17th minute, a miscommunication by the Titan defense led to the first goal of the game for Carthage. Peyton Olinski quickly capitalized near the goal line on a pass from midfield, putting the Firebirds up 1-nil.

Less than three minutes later, a Carthage throw-in soon put the ball at the Firebirds six. Ruby Hillegass spun around an IWU defender, passed the ball to her right, and found the foot of Jess Beymer who kicked it over the head of a leaping Vanessa Gray to give Carthage a 2-0 cushion.

A shot in the 31st minute off the foot of sophomore Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington South) from 15 yards out nearly snuck past a diving Carthage goalkeeper, who deflected the ball back into play. The Titans received another golden scoring opportunity but sophomore Taylor Haun's (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) rebound ricocheted off the right crossbar.

Carthage would strike again two minutes later off of a Titan goal kick, giving the Firebirds a 3-0 lead, which they would take into the halftime break.

A foul on the Firebirds four minutes into the second half gave Illinois Wesleyan a free kick eight yards out. Junior Ava Mapes (Golden, Colo.-Lakewood) took the freebie, finding the back of the net and putting the Titans on the board, 3-1.

With under two minutes remaining, sophomore Emily Kunzer (Kaneland, Ill.-Elburn) found the back of the net off of a pass from junior Alexis Shackelford (Orland Park, Ill.-Marist), but four second half goals from the Firebirds ended the game 7-2, giving Carthage their second CCIW win.

The Titans continue CCIW play Wednesday, Oct. 8 at Wheaton College. The match is set for 7 p.m. at Joe Bean Stadium in Wheaton, Ill.
