Women’s Soccer Draws With Wheaton

Gray records five saves in scoreless draw

WHEATON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team ended in a scoreless draw with College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin opponent Wheaton College Wednesday night, Oct. 8. The Titans record moves to 5-5-2 on the season and 0-1-1 in the CCIW, while the Thunder move to 4-4-4 on the year and 1-1-1 in league play.

With plenty of opportunities to score in both nets, Wheaton edged IWU in total shots (13-10) and shots on target (6-5). Sophomore goalkeeper Vanessa Gray (Burlington, Ontario, Canada-Dr. Frank J. Hayden) recorded five saves, compared to four saves from the Thunder goalkeeper.

In the 11th minute, junior Sophie Lampert (Hudson, Ill.-Normal West) nearly broke the game open when her shot from the six yard-line hit the left post after a diving effort from the Wheaton goalie. Sophomore Taylor Haun (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) looked poised to collect the rebound and fire a shot at goal, but was tripped up by a Thunder defender before the scoring chance came to fruition.

With either team yet to get on the scoreboard, the Titans gathered three clean looks in the 85th minute. Sophomore Liza Wiley's (Bloomington, Ind.-Home School) header from the box hit the left post and ricocheted back into play. Chaos ensued as the ball hit several Thunder defenders before finding the feet of Wiley again who attempted a shot, but was blocked by the Wheaton team. Fellow sophomore Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington South) entered the scene and gave IWU one last look at goal, but the shot was blocked as well.

Following Illinois Wesleyan's three looks in the box, the Titans gained a corner kick opportunity with under five minutes remaining, but the chance was thwarted as Wheaton and IWU ended in a scoreless tie.

Illinois Wesleyan travels back to the friendly confines of Neis Field Saturday, Oct. 11 for a homecoming matchup with North Park University. Match time is set for 1 p.m. and will serve as the front half of a doubleheader with the Titan men's team.
