Titans Clinch Spot in CCIW Tournament With Win at Carroll

First CCIW Tournament appearance since 2022

WAUKESHA, Wis. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team staked its spot in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin tournament Saturday night, Oct. 25 with a 1-0 victory over Carroll University. With seeding still up in the air, the Titans climb to 3-3-1 in CCIW play and 8-7-2 overall, while the Pioneers season comes to a close, as they were eliminated from the league tournament race. CU ends its season 5-6-5 and 2-5-1 in conference play.

Sophomore Vanessa Gray (Burlington, Ontario, Canada-Dr. Frank J. Hayden) continued her strong play in net, recording four saves in her shutout win. IWU had nine shots to CU's seven, but the Pios nailed four on target compared to the Titans' three.

In the 26th minute, a yellow card awarded to Carroll resulted in an IWU free kick opportunity on its offensive side of the field. Senior Kayley Carew (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) sailed a pass into the goal box off of the free chance as sophomore Liza Wiley (Bloomington, Ind.-Home School) went airborne in an attempt to head the ball into the goal, but was met by the Pioneers goalie as the two collided.

In a less than eventful first period, neither team recorded a shot on target until the 33rd minute. Off of a Pio corner kick, Gray remained calm and made a great save in the hustle and bustle of the box to keep the game scoreless.

With just two minutes remaining in the first period, Wiley nearly gave the Titans the lead as back-to-back throw-ins put Green and White on the offensive. Wiley dribbled to her left and booted the ball barely over the top crossbar as the half ended with zeros on the scoreboard.

Early in the second period, junior Sophie Lampert (Hudson, Ill.-Normal West) blasted a shot from nearly 25 yards out into the goalie box. The ball bounced off of the CU defender, attempting to make the save, and out of reach as sophomore Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington South) came streaking in for the easy chip shot into the goal. Robinson's sixth goal of the season gave the Titans a 1-nil advantage and proved to be the game-winner.

In the 66th minute, it appeared that the Pioneers would tie up the contest. CU's Addie Decker went on a fastbreak and had a wide open shot from 15 yards out, however Gray made another diving save to keep the IWU lead intact.

With five minutes remaining, Carroll had a golden scoring opportunity on a free kick 12 yards out. The Pios'  last ditch effort scorched the right crossbar and went out of bounds giving IWU the key 1-nil league victory.

The Titans look to improve their seeding for the CCIW Tournament on the road Wednesday, Oct. 29 at Millikin University. Kickoff in Decatur, Ill. is scheduled for 7 p.m.
