Women’s Soccer Caps Regular Season with Win at Millikin, Secures No. 4 Seed in CCIW Tournament

Gray records fifth career shutout

DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team locked up home turf advantage in the quarterfinals of the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Tournament Wednesday, Oct. 29 in a 1-0 win over Millikin University in the regular season finale. The Big Blue end their season 4-10-4 and 1-5-2 in CCIW play. The Titans climb to their best mark since 2022, 9-7-2 on the year, and end the regular season 4-3-1 in league play to grab the No. 4 seed in the upcoming CCIW Tournament.

Sophomore goalkeeper Vanessa Gray (Burlington, Ontario, Canada-Dr. Frank J. Hayden) spearheaded the strong Titan defense, recording her fifth career shutout and racking up a pair of saves. In all, IWU recorded nine shots on target to Millikin's three.

The Titans rattled off three consecutive shots on target early in the contest, each met by the Big Blue keeper.  A carbon copy of sophomore Liza Wiley's (Bloomington, Ind.-Home School) shot in the 10th minute, senior Kayley Carew (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) attempted a shot a minute later from the same spot on the field as Wiley, but was met by the stalwart Millikin goalie.

After several close calls, the Green and White broke through in the 28th minute. Pressuring the Big Blue's backline on a ball played back, freshman Hannah Henry (Neenah, Wis.-Neenah) blocked a clear attempt and conveniently directed the ball to the feet of sophomore Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington South). With a defender at her hip, Robinson went straight at goal and blasted a shot inside the near post for a 1-nil IWU advantage.

A series of Big Blue throw-ins and corner kicks in the 52nd minute provided an opportunity for Millikin to tie it up, but the Titan defense remained poised. The Green and White cleared both corner kick attempts, alleviating pressure on Gray as the score remain unchanged.

Chaos ensued in the 69th minute, as a corner kick lined up a great scoring look for the Big Blue. With the ball just inches from the goal line, senior Bree Cordray (Bloomington, Ill.-University High) blocked Millikin's first shot attempt, before a second attempt scraped the outside of the post as the Titans maintained their 1-nil lead for the remainder of the game.

With the win, postseason soccer returns to Neis Field Saturday, Nov. 1, as the fourth-seeded Titans play host to No. 5 seed Wheaton in the CCIW Tournament Quarterfinals. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
