Women’s Soccer Shutouts Augie Behind Wiley’s Brace

Gray records five saves in IWU shutout

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team earned its first College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin victory of the year Wednesday, Oct. 15, picking up a 3-0 shutout over Augustana College at Neis Field. Illinois Wesleyan climbs to 6-6-2 and 1-2-1 in league play, while Augustana falls to 3-9-2 and 0-5-0 in the CCIW.

Sophomore Vanessa Gray (Burlington, Ontario, Canada-Frank J. Hayden) spent nearly all 90 minutes in goal in the Titan shutout. Gray recorded five saves in her 82 minutes in goal before sophomore Ella Randall (San Francisco, Calif.-The Bay School of San Francisco) relieved Gray and recorded one save in the final minutes. IWU led Augustana in shots (35-12) and shots on target (20-6).

The Titans had two clean looks at goal in the 29th minute and 32nd minute. Junior Sophie Lampert (Hudson, Ill.-Normal West) beat her defender 18 yards out and narrowly missed the open shot to the left. Just three minutes later, senior Jenna Gravitt (Morton, Ill.-Morton) earned a free kick opportunity 25 yards away from goal. Gravitt's long ball hit the top crossbar and nearly gave the Titans the lead, but instead the match remained deadlocked, 0-0.

Early in the second half, sophomore Liza Wiley (Bloomington, Ind.-Home School) gave IWU the lead off of a corner kick. The Titans played the set piece short, where a give-and-go saw senior Kayley Carew (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre) sent a cross to the middle of the box. With a defender on her back, Wiley gained control near the six and juked her defender to score the go-ahead strike.

Again, in the 76th minute, Wiley found herself with the ball at the six. Following a throw-in, Gravitt went on the offensive, charging towards goal and found junior Ava Mapes (Golden, Colo.-Lakewood) near goal, who made a touch towards Wiley. Wiley found the back of the net to put the Titans up 2-nil and marked the fourth multi-score game of her career.

IWU was not done yet, as Mapes found herself near goal again in the 82nd minute. After a shot from Gravitt rebounded off of the Augustana goalie, Mapes charged into the goal box and found the back of the net to provide Titan insurance, going up 3-0.

Illinois Wesleyan returns to the pitch Saturday, Oct. 18, for a Senior Day showdown with Elmhurst University. The Titans will recognize their four seniors prior to the 1 p.m. start against the Bluejays.
