Women’s Soccer Picks Up Win Over Elmhurst on Senior Day

Titans pick up key points in race for CCIW Tournament bid

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team picked up a key win in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin race, as the Titans defended their home field with a 3-1 win over Elmhurst University on Senior Day Saturday, Oct. 18. With its second straight win, IWU improves to 7-6-2 overall, and 2-2-1 in CCIW play, while EU slips to 9-5-2 overall, and 1-4-1 in league action.

Prior to the start of the contest, Illinois Wesleyan honored its four seniors, Bree Cordray (Bloomington, Ill.-University High), Kayley Carew (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame), Maya Flemming (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge), and Jenna Gravitt (Morton, Ill.-Morton)

Sophomore Liza Wiley (Bloomington, Ind.) caught the Bluejays sleeping, easily stealing the ball to keep possession in IWU's offensive zone. The sophomore sent a pass to junior Ava Mapes (Golden, Colo.-Lakewood), who one-touched it to junior Sophie Lampert (Hudson, Ill.-Normal West) for a one-on-one opportunity. Lampert dribbled and fired one to the low right corner for a goal, giving the Green and White a 1-nil lead in the seventh minute.

With time dwindling down in the opening half, IWU looked poised to score on a throw-in, but Carew's shot was saved by Elmhurst to keep it a one score game at the halfway point.

Illinois Wesleyan got right back after it in the second half, doubling its lead in the 53rd minute. Fleming booted a ball off an EU throw-in to Mapes down the left sideline, who then sent it over to Gravitt. The senior made the most of her Senior Day, as she sent a pass to sophomore Taylor Haun (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township), who found the back of the net, as she sent it just high enough over the hands of the Bluejays goalkeeper.

Elmhurst neutralized an own goal by getting on the scoreboard to snake it 3-1 in the 80th minute. The Bluejays tried to score with less than a minute left on the clock, but the shot was blocked, locking in the final score of 3-1.

IWU's offense was led by two points from Haun, Lampert, and Mapes, as Mapes notched a career-high two assists on the day. Logging all 90 minutes in goal, sophomore Vanessa Gray (Burlington, Ontario, Canada-Dr. Frank J. Hayden) picked up her sixth win of the season behind five saves.

The Titans will remain at home, as they host North Central College Wednesday night, Oct. 22. Action is set to begin at 7 p.m. at Neis Field.
