Men’s Hoops Rolls Past Augustana

Twelve Titans score in the win

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The fifth-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University men's basketball team ran away with an 82-52 win over Augustana College in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play inside the Shirk Center Wednesday night, Jan. 22. With the win, IWU kept pace in the CCIW standings at 7-1 and pushed its record to 15-2 overall. Augie dropped to 10-7 (3-5 CCIW).

Illinois Wesleyan saw 12 different Titans score in the game, with four players finishing in double figures. Senior Nick Roper (St. Louis, Mo.-MICDS) led the way with 14 points and seven rebounds, while senior Harrison Wilmsen (St. Louis, Mo.-Priory) added 11 points on 5-of-5 shooting. Senior Hakim Williams (Round Lake, Ill.-Round Lake) and Trey Bazzell (Fairbury, Ill.-Prairie Central) scored 10 points apiece.

The Green and White shot the ball well, connecting on 30-of-55 shot attempts. IWU went 7-for-20 from beyond the arc and 15-for-21 at the free throw line. Augie was held to a field goal percentage of 30.6 (15-of-49) and just 5-for-22 from distance. The Vikings knocked down 17-of-23 free throw chances.

The Titans held leads in points off turnovers (11-4), second-chance scoring (11-0), bench scoring (32-27), fastbreak points (9-3), and points in the paint (42-12). IWU controlled the rebounding battle, 39-25, and held a slim 13-12 edge in turnovers.

A three-pointer by sophomore Mason Funk (Normal, Ill.-University High) kicked off the scoring for the Titans, lifting the home team to an early 3-2 edge. Augie responded with a pair of buckets, but Williams kicked off a seven-point IWU spurt. After a free throw from senior Marko Anderson (Park Ridge, Ill.-Maine South), Bazzell drilled a three-pointer off Anderson's assist before Anderson hit a jumper to put Illinois Wesleyan in front, 14-6.

Free throws seemed to be the only source of scoring for a stretch midway through the period before Bazzell's second triple of the night broke the run. The three-pointer, which came off an assist from Williams, gave the Green and White a 21-14 lead with 5:26 left in the half.

The Vikings clawed back within two on a five-point run, but IWU outscored Augie 7-4 over the final minutes to go into the break with a 29-23 advantage.

Illinois Wesleyan erupted in the second half, outsourcing Augustana 53-29 over the 20-minute frame. The Titans scored the first eight points of the period, beginning with a Wilmsen layup and ending with a Roper and-one over less than two minutes of gameplay.

With a 14-point lead, the Green and White rattled off another big run, this time scoring 10 straight points over three minutes to stretch the lead to 52-31 at the 13-minute mark.

The Titans remained in control for the duration of the period as sophomore Dylan Schmidt (Johnsburg, Ill.-Johnsburg) threw down a two-handed slam off senior Shane Miller's (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) heady pass in transition to put a bow on an 82-52 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan hosts Wheaton College this Saturday, Jan. 25. Tipoff is set for 4:15 p.m. and will serve as the second leg of a doubleheader with the IWU women's basketball team as well as the team's annual PinkZone game.

At halftime, IWU will recognize its school record 10 College Sports Communicators Academic All-America honorees from the 2023-24 academic year.
