Women’s Soccer Falls to Wartburg

Titans back at Midwest Tournament for Sunday match with No. 7 UW-La Crosse

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – In its opening match of the Midwest Tournament, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team faltered, 2-0 in its match against Wartburg College, Saturday, Sept. 7. The Titans slipped to 0-3 on the season while Wartburg found its first win of the season to move to 1-2.

The Green and White faced a fairly level matchup with the Knights but trailed 15-11 in shots. The Titans had seven corner kicks to Wartburg's four while both teams accrued seven saves.

The opening half saw Wartburg lead nine shots to IWU's five while the Titans had the upperhand in corner kick opportunities, 4-2. Freshman Grace Kiewiet (Leawood, Kan.-Notre Dame de Sion) tallied five saves through the first 45 minutes, before picking up another in the second half.

Wartburg's Sami Webster put the Knights ahead 1-nil in the 13th minute with a shot to the top left corner, just out of Kiewiet's reach, and would ultimately carry that lead into halftime.

Freshman Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington South) attempted to get IWU on the board early in the second half with a shot off of a corner kick opportunity, but the effort was warded by Wartburg's keeper.

In the 68th minute, Wartburg's Natalie Theisfeld managed to pull Illinois Wesleyan's defense to the left before crossing a shot deep to the bottom right corner to give the Knights the 2-0 advantage.

With three minutes left in the match, freshman Ellen Dahlquist (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) tried to set up a leading pass for the Green and White's front line but Wartburg's goalie managed to snag the pass before IWU could execute.

IWU will face No. 7 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Sunday, Sept. 8 for the latter half of its two-game Midwest Tournament weekend. Game time is set for 12 p.m. on West Campus Field in River Forest, Ill. Follow along with live stats and the live stream on the women's soccer schedule page of iwusports.com.
