Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Upended by No. 7 UW-Lacrosse

Titans travel to Knox College Sept. 11

RIVER FOREST, Ill. – Facing its toughest challenge of the season so far, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team succumbed to a 2-0 deficit against No. 7 University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, Sunday, Sept. 8 in its second and final game of the Midwest Tournament in River Forest, Ill.

The Green and White held UWL to a two-goal spread, tying for the lowest margin of victory the Eagles have had so far this season. UWL had the advantage in shots on goal, 17-5, and corners, 14-1, but IWU's freshman keeper Grace Kiewiet (Leawood, Kan.-Notre Dame de Sion) led the way with 15 saves to the Eagles five.

Kiewiet put in work between the pipes, setting a new career best and recording the third-most single game saves in program history with 15 stops against a top-10 ranked opponent. Her previous best of six, set a day ago against Wartburg, was broken within the first 18 minutes of play. Through the first half, Kiewiet recorded 10 saves while facing 15 shots.

UW-La Crosse broke the stalemate in the 19th minute with a rebound goal off of a corner kick opportunity, giving the Eagles a 1-0 edge. In the 31st minute, UWL used its quick ball movement to find an opening and send the ball into the net, but the Titans' saving grace was an offsides call to keep the score within one. IWU managed to hold off the Eagles for the remaining 15 minutes of the first half to enter halftime trailing by one.

The second half began as an uneventful affair but the Eagles found an opportunity in the 62nd minute of play with a long pass landing in the center of the box for a swift goal for UWL to take a 2-nil lead.

IWU got their closest looks at a goal with back-to-back shots from freshmen Liza Wiley (Bloomington, Ind. Home School) and Vanessa Gray (Burlington, Ontario, Canada-Dr. Frank J. Hayden) with five minutes left to play, but UWL's keeper batted away the first before the second was powered high. With the Eagles attempting to run the clock with a casual transition downfield, freshman Taylor Haun (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) snuck in for the steal before setting up junior Bree Cordray (LeRoy, Ill.-University High) for another shot opportunity but a collision in the box stunted the Titans' advances. UWL's 2-0 win moves them to 4-0 on the season while IWU is still looking for its first win, facing an 0-4 record.

IWU continues its stretch of games on the road Wednesday, Sept. 11 as the Titans head to Galesburg, Ill. for a bout with Knox College.
