Women’s Soccer Falters to Hope College

IWU opens CCIW play, Oct. 5 against Carthage

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – An early deficit proved too large to overcome as the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team fell to Hope College, 6-2, Wednesday evening, Sept. 25, at Neis Field. The Titans (2-6-1) fell behind the Flying Dutch (4-2-1) in the opening 11 minutes before mounting a comeback that ultimately fell short.

Hope cracked the scoreboard in the third minute as IWU turned the ball over in the midfield and the Flying Dutch capitalized with a shot inside the far post. Seven minutes later, Hope extended its lead to 2-nil.

Freshman Liza Wiley (Bloomington, Ind.-Home School) drew a foul a few yards outside the box in the 15th minute. The free kick taken by Bree Cordray (Le Roy, Ill.-University High) bounced around before sophomore Sophie Lampert (Hudson, Ill.-Normal West) volleyed in the goal to put IWU on the board.

Hope came right back, using a corner kick, to push ahead two, 3-1.

IWU struck first out of the break as Wiley switched fields with a pass to Cordray, who played a ball to space for senior Tegan Timerman (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame). With two defenders closing in, Timerman cut in towards goal and fired a shot past the Hope keeper. The goal pulled the Green and White within one, 3-2, less than five minutes into the half.

The Titans kept the pressure on Hope, using a free kick and a couple corners to create chances near goal, but could not capitalize.

The Flying Dutch used goals in the 61st, 62nd, and 79th minutes as IWU fell, 6-2.

Freshman Ella Randall (San Francisco, Calif.-The Bay School of San Francisco) made a career-high 11 saves in 90 minutes in goal.

Illinois Wesleyan trailed in shots, 27-15, including shots on goal, 17-6. Hope earned a 7-3 edge in corners, while IWU held a 3-2 advantage in the second half.

IWU will take the weekend off before opening College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play on homecoming weekend, Oct. 4-6. The Titan women's soccer team will face Carthage College Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on Neis Field.
