Women’s Soccer Falls to Carthage in CCIW Opener

Titans back at home Wednesday, Oct. 9 against Wheaton

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team struggled to defend quick ball movement as the Titans fell, 2-0, to Carthage College in a Homecoming finale, Saturday, Oct. 5. IWU dips to 2-7-1 and 0-1 in CCIW play while Carthage climbs to 5-2-3 and 1-1-0 in the league.

Junior Sammie Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) found herself open down the sideline twice in the opening half but too much boot behind the leading passes thwarted the effort for the Green and White.

A clutch save by freshman Grace Kiewiet (Leawood, Kan.-Notre Dame de Sion) in the 24th minute kept the Firebirds scoreless but Carthage answered in the 41st minute with a goal off a corner kick opportunity leaving IWU trailing 1-nil going into the second half.

Carthage found another goal in the 79th minute to move ahead 2-0. Facing back-to-back shots, Kiewiet got a hand on the first before the second shot was waved off by a Firebird offside call, preventing Carthage from gaining a 3-0 lead in the final two minutes of play.

Kiewiet recorded six saves to the Firebird keeper's four on the day but Carthage led in both shots (23-10) and corners (14-2).

The Titans will wrap up their four-game stretch at home Wednesday, Oct. 9 with a CCIW contest against Wheaton College.
