Early Goals Fuel Women’s Soccer to Shutout of Wheaton

IWU travels to North Park Saturday, Oct. 12

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Freshman Grace Kiewiet (Leawood, Kan.-Notre Dame de Sion) picked up her second career shutout to propel the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team to a 3-0 win over Wheaton College Wednesday night, Oct. 9, at Neis Field in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. With the victory, IWU improved to 3-7-1 (1-1-0 CCIW), while Wheaton slipped to 4-7-1 (1-1-1 CCIW).

Kiewiet earned the win in between the posts, but worked hard for the shutout as the freshman faced 24 shots by the Thunder. Wheaton, which doubled up IWU in total shots (24-12), saw all eight of its chances on target stopped by Kiewiet to preserve the shutout. The freshman keeper alongside the Titan defense fought off eight Thunder corner kick opportunities, as the Green and White rode early goals to the victory.

Senior Tegan Timerman (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) delivered a cross to the center of the box, where junior Sammie Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) one-touched a pass back to junior Bree Cordray (Le Roy, Ill.-University High). In one fluid motion, Cordray stepped to the ball and buried a shot inside the post to give IWU a 1-nil lead just over six minutes into the game.

The Titans quickly doubled their lead as the Green and White scored less than a minute later. Freshman Liza Wiley (Bloomington, Ind.-Home School) drew a foul just across midfield, setting up the reset. Sophomore Ava Mapes (Golden, Colo.-Lakewood) booted the ball into the box, where it was initially knocked out but right to the foot of freshman Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington South), who sent the ball back into the box. Fighting through traffic, Wiley leaped above a few Thunder defenders and knocked the ball into the back of the net to double the lead, 2-nil, at the 7:02 mark.

Shanks and Wiley teamed up early in the second half to tack on an insurance goal in the 49th minute. Picking up her second helper of the night, Shanks set Wiley up for her second goal of the game to extend the Titan lead, 3-0.

Illinois Wesleyan will travel to North Park University Saturday, Oct. 12 for a 5 p.m. matchup at Holmgren Athletic Complex in Chicago, Ill.
