Women’s Soccer Stymied by Vikings

Titans back on the road Oct. 16 against Augustana

CHICAGO – The Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team was downed in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action Saturday, Oct. 12 as the Titans fell 2-nil to North Park University. IWU dips to 3-8-1 and 1-2 in CCIW play while NPU picks up its first league win, moving to 5-6-1 and 1-2-1 in conference action.

The opening half saw the Green and White trailing in shots 13-3 and corner kicks 5-2 but freshman Grace Kiewiet (Leawood, Kan.-Notre Dame de Sion) led the way in saves with five to the Vikings' two.

A clutch effort by junior Sammie Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) in the 15th minute kept North Park scoreless to start the match. NPU took a corner kick that was initially deflected by Kiewiet, but NPU took another shot, this time saved by Shanks as she moved to defend the net.

NPU got on the board in the 19th minute as the Vikings took back-to-back shots before the second attempt bounced off the right post and skittered into the net to take a 1-nil lead.

IWU saw a couple close calls in the final nine minutes of the half but were saved by a pair of offside calls on the Vikings and some crucial blocked shots by the Titan defense.

The second half was more evenly matched as both teams recorded seven shots.

Out of the half, a Titan foul in the 57th minute put the Vikings in position for a free kick where an awaiting Viking lofted the ball over Kiewiet's head for NPU's second goal of the night in what would ultimately be the final score, 2-0 in favor of the home team.

IWU totaled 10 shots on the evening, six of which were on goal. NPU recorded 20 shots, eight on goal, and led 8-4 in corner kick opportunities. Both Illinois Wesleyan and North Park recorded six saves in the contest.

Illinois Wesleyan is back on the road Wednesday, Oct. 16 as they travel to Rock Island, Ill. to take on the Vikings of Augustana College.
