Women’s Soccer Draws With Augustana

Back on the road for match with Elmhurst, Oct. 19

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Looking to increase its standings in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team landed a 1-1 draw with Augustana College Wednesday night, Oct. 16. With the tie, IWU moves to 3-8-2 and 1-2-1 in CCIW as Augustana's record stands at 7-4-3, 1-3-1 CCIW.

Augustana led with 23 shots to IWU's 17 but it was the Titans who led in shots on goal 9-7. Freshman Grace Kiewiet (Leawood, Kan.-Notre Dame de Sion) recorded six saves on the night while Augustana's keeper picked up eight.

The Vikings cracked the scoreboard first with a header goal directly off of a corner kick in the 27th minute but the Titans made sure to answer before the half was up.

Freshman Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington South) sent a big boot from almost 30 yards out for the first half equalizer, marking the first goal of the defender's career.

Freshman Vanessa Gray (Burlington, Ontario, Canada Dr. Frank J. Hayden) got off two more shots before the half's end but were blocked and saved by the Viking defense.

A fairly even matched second half saw IWU taking eight shots to the VIkings 11 while both keepers recorded three saves.

Robinson would later try to replicate her goal late in the game off a pass from senior Tegan Timerman (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame), but this time Augustana's goalkeeper managed to get a hand on it and turn it into a corner kick for the Titans. Despite the quick setup, the Titans were unable to get the ball in play.

On the other end of the field, Augustana was given a corner kick opportunity in the last two minutes of play and despite taking three consecutive shots, IWU was able to deny two while the last was off target, resulting in the 1-1 draw.

Illinois Wesleyan is back on the road Saturday, Oct. 19 for another CCIW round, this time with the Bluejays of Elmhurst University.
