Women’s Soccer Downed by Last Minute Elmhurst Goal

Titans back in action Wednesday, Oct. 26 at North Central

ELMHURST, Ill. – An unfortunate last minute goal by the opposition led to the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team's 1-nil fall against College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe Elmhurst University Saturday night, Oct. 19. The Titans dip to 3-9-2, 1-3-1 in CCIW play while Elmhurst climbs to 8-7-2 and 3-3 in league action.

An uneventful first half saw the Green and White controlling with eight shots, two of which were on goal while the Titan defense led by freshman Keira Robinson (Bloomington, Ind.-Bloomington South) and junior Maya Flemming (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge) limited the Bluejays to just five shots through the first 45 minutes with only one being on target before being saved by freshman Grace Kiewiet (Leawood, Kan.-Notre Dame de Sion)

Out of the break, junior Kayley Carew (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) serviced the corner kick into sophomore Ava Mapes (Golden, Colo.-Lakewood) who, trying to use every bit of her six foot stature, attempted a header but could not get the angle for the goal. IWU quickly won the ball back with junior Sammie Shanks (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) taking the ball towards the corner before crossing to junior Bree Cordray (Le Roy, Ill.-University High) for the shot that ultimately missed high.

Freshman Ellen Dahlquist (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) took the ball up the sideline before passing into junior Jenna Gravitt (Morton, Ill.-Morton) for a quick header, but the Bluejays' keeper was already in position for the stop, keeping the game at nil-nil with less than four minutes left to play.

After the Bluejays suffered a disallowed goal by way of an offside call, Elmhurst came back with a one-on-one play with Kiewiet for what would be the game-winning goal.

Despite doubling up in shots 16-8, IWU suffered 1-nil with the costly last-minute goal. Kiewiet recorded two saves in the match while the Titan defense allowed only three shots on goal.

Illinois Wesleyan is back in action Wednesday, Oct. 23 as the Titans head to North Central College for the final road game of the regular season.
