Women’s Soccer Mounts Comeback to Draw with Dominican

Randall makes save with 17 seconds left to preserve tie

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – Two goals in the final nine minutes of play led the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team to a 3-3 draw against Dominican University Sunday afternoon, Sept. 22. IWU (2-5-1) fought back from a two-goal deficit at halftime to hold DU (2-4-1) to a draw.

The Stars scored in the ninth minute to take an early lead before doubling their advantage with a strike in the 31st minute to carry a 2-nil lead into the break. Despite DU's lead, both teams finished with 10 shots in the first 45, with IWU holding leads in corners (3-1) and saves (3-2).

The freshmen duo of Taylor Haun (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) and Liza Wiley (Bloomington, Ind.-Home School) cut the Dominican advantage in half as the game clock ticked into the 58th minute. Wiley delivered a deep cross in from the corner and Haun got her head on it to redirect it into the back of the net. The goal, Haun's second of the season, trimmed DU's lead to one, 2-1.

After Dominican responded with a goal in the 78th minute, junior captain Bree Cordray (LeRoy, Ill.-University High) took advantage of a deflection in the box for IWU's second goal of the match thanks to an assist by fellow captain senior Tegan Timerman (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) to swing momentum back in favor of the Green and White.

Quickly gaining possession of the ensuing restart, the Titans garnered back-to-back corners to keep pressure on the Stars backline. After seeing a shot go wide left moments earlier, Wiley would not be denied as she ripped a shot off of a deflected corner kick from Haun, past the DU keeper to level the score, 3-3, with just over six minutes to play.

Hungry for more, Illinois Wesleyan did not let up as Wiley, Timerman, and Cordray registered shots. Despite three good chances, the game remained deadlocked into the final minute.

The Stars mounted one last push as DU earned a corner with time ticking down, but freshman Ella Randall (San Francisco, Calif.-The Bay School of San Francisco) made the save with 17 seconds left to preserve the 3-3 draw. The clutch play was one of four saves on the day from Randall, who moved to 1-0-1 in between the pipes.

Illinois Wesleyan finished with a 23-16 lead in shots, including an 8-7 edge in shots on target. Dominican finished with five saves to IWU's four, while the Green and White doubled up the Stars in corners, 8-4.

IWU continues a four-game home stretch Wednesday, Sept. 25 with a match against Hope College. Game time is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Neis Field.
