Titan Offense Erupts Against Fighting Scots

Game called in 74th minute due to weather

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Finding its rhythm on the road against Monmouth College, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team cruised to an 8-3 victory against the Fighting Scots Sunday, Sept. 21. It marked the most goals in a game for the program since 2021, while freshman Liza Wiley (Bloomington, Ind.-Home School) net the second hat trick of her young career. IWU moves to 2-5 on the season while Monmouth stumbles to 2-4-2.

The opening half saw the Titans dominating the possession clock while leading in shots, 25-4, shots on goal, 13-4, and corner kicks, 4-0. Sophomore Sophie Lampert (Hudson, Ill.-Normal West) put the Green and White on the board in the second minute of play, drawing out Monmouth's defender deep into the corner before booting the ball to the far side of the net for her first goal of the season.

Monmouth leveled the score in the ninth minute, but IWU was quick to answer as junior Maya Flemming (Crystal Lake, Ill.-Prairie Ridge) sent a long-range shot over the keeper's head to regain the lead, 2-1, in the 12th minute. Five minutes later, senior captain Tegan Timerman (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) weaving through the Monmouth defense, ripped a shot off the crossbar that ultimately bounced into the back of the net for the 3-1 advantage.

Similar to her first goal of the game, Flemming found herself in prime position of a deflected corner kick for a shot right at Monmouth's keeper who could not secure the stop, leading to IWU's 4-1 advantage 21 minutes into the game.

The goals kept coming as strikes from Wiley and junior Jenna Gravitt (Morton, Ill.-Morton) opened up a 6-1 Titan lead.

Monmouth broke the five-goal run with two scores of its own in the 40th and 45th minutes to close the first half, 6-3, in favor of IWU.

Less than five minutes into the second half, freshman Ellen Dahlquist (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) assisted in Wiley's second goal of the game. Wiley completed the hat trick off a helper from Lampert in the 55th minute to push Illinois Wesleyan ahead, 8-3.

The score carried into the 74th minute, where it was called due to inclement weather. As a result of surpassing the 70th-minute mark is official, despite not playing the full 90.

Illinois Wesleyan hosts Dominican University tomorrow, Sept. 22. Kickoff is set for 2 p.m. at Neis Field.
