Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Titans Blanked by No. 1 WashU

Two-game weekend up next for women’s soccer

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – Facing the top-ranked team in the nation, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team fell 4-0 to the Bears of Washington University in St. Louis Tuesday evening, Sept. 17. IWU dips to 1-5 on the year while WashU maintains its undefeated streak and climbs to 7-0.

The Bears got out ahead early with a quick tip-in in the second minute of play before a cross pass connected with WashU's Ally Hackett for a header goal to lead 2-0 at the 15 minute mark.

A foul drawn by freshman Taylor Haun (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) gave IWU a free kick opportunity in the 26th minute but a big boot by freshman Vanessa Gray (Burlington, Ontario, Canada-Dr. Frank J. Hayden) was too wide to land a shot opportunity.

Just before the break, WashU managed a short hop shot to send the Titans trailing 3-nil into halftime.

Despite WashU picking up another goal in the 49th minute to move ahead 4-0, the Green and White defense was able to hold off the Bears for the remaining 41 minutes of play. With 22 shots faced, freshmen keepers Grace Kiewiet (Leawood, Kan.-Notre Dame de Sion) and Ella Randall (San Francisco, Calif.-The Bay School of San Francisco) both made appearances between the pipes. Kiewiet was good for 82 minutes and four saves while Randall recorded one stop in her eight minutes defending the net.

IWU looks ahead to the weekend as the Titans travel to Monmouth College Saturday, Sept. 21 for a 10 a.m. match before hosting Dominican University Sunday, Sept. 22 for a 1 p.m. contest on Neis Field.
