Cross Country Snags a Pair of Seventh Place Finishes at ISU Redbird Invite

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois Wesleyan University men's and women's cross country teams jump-started the 2024 season at the Division I-heavy Redbird Invite hosted by Illinois State University, Friday, Sept. 13. The women's squad finished seventh out of 11 teams with 190 points and the men, also finishing seventh, scored 177 points in the eight-team field.

Senior Annalese Chudy (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) edged her way into the top 15 early on in the six-kilometer women's race, clocking an 11:10.3 halfway split before ultimately finishing 19th in 22:53.60. Freshman Maddie Morgan (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard West) had an exciting collegiate debut, settling into 34th at the halfway point and finishing 35th in the 89-person field in a time of 23:46.00. Senior Emma McGrath (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Oak Lawn) net a personal-best performance in the season opener, clocking a time of 24:31.50 to finish 47th.

Leading the way for the Titans on the men's side was senior Nick Fisch (Woodridge, Ill.-Montini Catholic). Fisch came through the 3k mark in 40th place but quickly clawed his way up 13 positions into 27th at the halfway point. The senior managed to track down a couple more runners to finish 25th in 26:05.30. Junior Zack Daniel (Lake Barrington, Ill.-Barrington) was the next Titan across the finish line, turning in a 27:00.50 effort for 46th place. Crossing the finish line back-to-back were junior Seth Hamerski (Mount Vernon, Ill.-Webber) and freshman Jack Thomas (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) in 52nd (27:19.50) and 53rd (27:21.10), respectively. Hamerski was one of four Titans to achieve a personal-best time on the hilly Weibring Golf Course along with McGrath, junior Abby Quinn (Chicago, Ill.-Marist), and sophomore Aidan Nishimura (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Hersey).

IWU's next race will send the Titans to Warrenville, Ill. Sept. 21 for the Gil Dodds Invitational hosted by Wheaton College.
