Women’s Soccer Stumbles in Season Opener at Simpson

Titans host Trine, Sunday, Sept. 1 for first home event of 2024

INDIANOLA, Iowa – With eight new faces in the starting lineup, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's soccer team faced its first test of the season at Simpson College, Friday, Aug. 30. The Titans fell to the Storm 2-0, dropping to 0-1-0 while Simpson climbs to 1-0-0.

Simpson picked up the first goal of the match 18 minutes into the contest but the Green and White defense managed to hold off the pursuing Storm for the rest of the half to enter halftime trailing 1-0.

With 13 minutes remaining in the second half, Simpson acted on a one-on-one opportunity but junior captain Bree Cordray (Bloomington, Ill.-University High) showcased her speed and agility, cutting across the field and sweeping the ball out of bounds before Simpson could capitalize. 

In the 78th minute, a long-range shot by Simpson's Ally Hoffa split the distance between Kiewiet and the crossbar to take a 2-0 lead. Moments later, senior captain Tegan Timerman (Peoria, Ill.-Peoria Notre Dame) attempted to set up freshman Liza Wiley (Bloomington, Ind.-Home School) in front of the net, but Wiley's header was rejected by the Storm goalie. 

Making her first collegiate start in goal was freshman Grace Kiewiet (Leawood, Kan.-Notre Dame de Sion) who recorded all 90 minutes between the posts. Kiewiet faced 22 shots and recorded five saves.

IWU turns its attention to Sunday, Sept. 1 when it hosts Simpson College for the first Titan home of the 2024 academic year. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Neis Field.
