Onsrud named CSC At-Large Academic All-America of the Year

GREENWOOD, Ind. - Months after their outstanding Illinois Wesleyan University women's golf careers came to an end, Lexi Onsrud (Normal, Ill.-University High) and Emma Thorman (Macomb, Ill.-Macomb) reeled in College Sports Communicators Academic All-America honors the organization announced Tuesday, July 16. Onsrud was voted the Academic All-America of the Year, while garnering CSC First Team Academic All-America accolades. Thorman was also tabbed a CSC First Team Academic All-America pick.

Onsrud marks the ninth time a Titan has reeled in CSC's Academic All-America of the Year award, a total that ranks top-four in Division III all-time. She joins Matthew Leritz (men's basketball - 2022), Meg Stanley (women's at-large - swimming - 2017), Rachel Anderson (women's track and field - 2008), Keelan Amelianovich (men's basketball - 2006), Korey Coon (men's basketball - 1999 & 2000), James Rinne (baseball - 1998), and Lon Erickson (football - 1997). She is also the 11th Titan across all sports to be a three-time Academic All-America selection.

Additionally, Onsrud and Thorman mark the first time a set of Titan women's golfers have earned Academic All-America honors in the same year. Onsrud, the program's first-ever three-time honoree, and Thorman make up the program's four selections.

Onsrud, who repeated as a first teamer after earning third team status in 2021, maintained a 4.00 grade point average as a kinesiology and allied health major. She excelled for the Titans in golf and was named the 2024 CCIW Woman of the Year and received the 2024 NCAA Division III Women's Golf Championship Elite 90 Award.

On the course, Onsrud was named all-region for the third time in her career as she posted a scoring average of 75.9 over 26.5 rounds in 11 tournaments in 2023-24. She finished in the top 20 in eight of the 11 tournaments with four top-five finishes, including a third-place finish at the CCIW Championship to earn her fourth All-CCIW accolade. The Normal, Ill., native finished off her collegiate career by posting the second-lowest 72-hole score at the NCAA Championship with a score of 301 to tie for 17th.

Thorman, an active member of CSC through her time as a student worker in the athletic communications office, garnered the prestigious honor for the first time in her career following a sensational senior season. 

The CCIW Women's Golfer of the Year, Thorman reeled in countless awards in her senior campaign. A WGCA All-America Honorable Mention pick, Thorman played in 26.5 rounds. She posted a school-record scoring average of 74.9 strokes per round over 11 tournaments and collected six top-five finishes. The Macomb, Ill. product fired six rounds of par-or-better, the most by a Titan in a single season in program history, and also set the program standards for 54-hole and 72-hole scoring. The CCIW medalist, Thorman garnered All-CCIW, WGCA All-Region, and CCIW Golfer of the Week accolades throughout the year. She closed out her IWU career with the program's best-ever individual finish at the NCAA Championship, tying for third with a school-record total of 293. Thorman maintained a 3.86 grade point average as a secondary education and english major.

Furthermore, IWU's all-time Academic All-American list now sits at 156, which is top-25 across NCAA Division I, II, and III, as well as top-10 in Division III. To view the list of Illinois Wesleyan's all-time awardwinners, click here.
