Nine Women’s Golfers Honored as WGCA All-American Scholars

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - The Illinois Wesleyan University women's golf team saw nine of its student-athletes recognized as members of the All-American Scholar Team announced by the Women's Golf Coaches Association Monday, July 1. In all, 1,497 women's collegiate golfers across all divisions from 412 programs were recognized with the prestigious honor.

Receiving the honor for the Green and White were seniors Rachel Ducaji (Springfield, Ill.-Sacred Heart-Griffin), Lexi Onsrud (Normal, Ill.-University High), Kira Petersen (Parker, Colo.-Chaparral), and Emma Thorman (Macomb, Ill.-Macomb), juniors Macy Ludwig (Effingham, Ill.-St. Anthony), Jacque O'Neill (Harbor Springs, Mich.-Harbor Springs), and Jadyn Spinks (Bloomington, Ill.-University High), as well as freshmen Emily Gastrau (Wauwatosa, Wis.-Wauwatosa East) and Sarah Sim (Hoffman Estates, Ill-Fremd). 

The criteria for selection to the All-American Scholar Team are some of the most stringent in all of college athletics and continue to demonstrate the high-level academic achievements of our players. To be selected, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have played in 50 percent of the college's regularly scheduled competitive rounds during the year nominated through the team's conference championship.

In her final season, Ducaji played 12 rounds over six tournaments. She tallied a scoring average of 80.3 and finished in the top-20 three times. Her single-round low came at the WashU Spring Invitational, April 6-7, where she carded an opening round 75, while her 36-hole low came at the Wartburg Fall Invite, Sept 9. Ducaji graduated in May with a degree in biology, having maintained a 3.99 GPA.

Onsrud, the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Woman of the Year, put together another strong season in her final year donning the Green and White. Onsrud played in all 26.5 rounds, posting a 75.9 stroke average. She totaled three rounds of par-or-better with four top-five finishes and six top-10 placements. A four-year letterwinner, Onsrud tied for 17th at the NCAA Division III National Championship and took third at the CCIW Championship. She was named the recipient of the CCIW's Elite 26 Award for the third year in a row, while also garnering All-CCIW and CCIW Golfer of the Week accolades. The winner of the NCAA's Elite 90 Award, Onsrud boasted a 4.00 GPA as a kinesiology and allied health major.

Petersen played in 12 rounds for the Titans, compiling a scoring average of 85.4. She competed in six tournaments, with three top-50 placements. Her best round of the season was a 76 at the Wartburg Fall Invite, Sept. 9. Petersen majored in psychology, graduating with a 3.82 GPA.

The CCIW Women's Golfer of the Year, Thorman reeled in countless awards in her senior campaign. A WGCA All-America Honorable Mention pick, Thorman played in 26.5 rounds. She posted a school-record scoring average of 74.9 strokes per round over 11 tournaments and collected six top-five finishes. The Macomb, Ill. product fired six rounds of par-or-better, the most by a Titan in a single season in program history, and also set the program standards for 54-hole and 72-hole scoring. The CCIW medalist, Thorman garnered All-CCIW, WGCA All-Region, and CCIW Golfer of the Week accolades throughout the year. She closed out her IWU career with the program's best-ever individual finish at the NCAA Championship, tying for third with a school-record total of 293. Thorman maintained a 3.86 grade point average as a secondary education and english major. 

Ludwig participated in all 26.5 rounds for the Green and White, concluding the season with an average of 76.8 strokes per round. She collected a win at the Kathy Niepagen Spring Fling, where she set the program's single round (five-under) and 36-hole (141, three-under) records. Ludwig posted five top-10 finishes in all, while tacking on a total of eight top-20 placements. A CCIW Golfer of the Week pick, Ludwig placed sixth at the league championship to earn All-CCIW honors for the third straight season. She closed out the season at the NCAA Division III Championship, tying for 58th. Ludwig also garnered WGCA All-Region honors. Ludwig holds a 3.90 GPA as a marketing major.

Competing in all 26.5 rounds, O'Neill compiled a scoring average of 78.5 over 11 events. She tallied season-low rounds of one-over 73 three times. O'Neill racked up six top-20 finishes on the year. She garnered All-CCIW status as she tied for ninth at the league championship. O'Neill closed out the season at the national tournament, where she tied for 43rd. A business major, O'Neill maintains a 3.79 grade point average.

Spinks, another steady in IWU's lineup, competed in all 26.5 rounds while putting together a career year. She posted a career-best scoring average of 78.7, and totalled six top-20 finishes. She finished runner-up at the CCIW Championship en route to all-conference honors. Spinks placed 69th at the NCAA Championships in May, helping guide IWU to a sixth-place finish. Majoring in psychology, Spinks carries a 3.50 GPA.

The CCIW's Newcomer of the Year, Gastrau competed in a total of 16 rounds, spanning eight tournaments. She secured a scoring average of 80.5 and tallied three top-20 finishes. Gastrau took sixth at the Millikin Dechert Classic, Sept. 29-30, while her 36-hole best came at the Wartburg Fall Invite (76-76=152), Sept. 9-10. She tallied a single-round low of two-over 74 at the IWU Fall Classic, Sept. 17. Gastrau is majoring in business and holds a GPA of 4.00.

In her first year as a Titan, Sim competed in six tournaments totaling 12 rounds. She notched an average of 83.3 strokes per round, while tallying a season-low round of one-over 73 at the Wartburg Fall Invite, Sept. 9. Sim placed tied for third at the Millikin Dechert Classic, Sept. 29-30, and tied for 20th at the Wartburg Fall Invite. A nursing major, Sim boasts a 3.93 grade point average.

IWU's nine honorees were the most in the CCIW. Augustana, Carroll, and North Central also had student-athletes recognized.
