Thorman & Women’s Golf Make History at NCAA Championship

NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. -
The Illinois Wesleyan University women's golf team posted its highest finish at an NCAA Division III National Championship since 2011 as the Titans placed tied for sixth at the 2024 national tournament at Keene Trace Golf Club Friday, May 24 with a program-record 72-hole total. Senior Emma Thorman (Macomb, Ill.-Macomb) secured a third-place finish, the highest individual placement in program history. 


Illinois Wesleyan turned in a final round score of 304 on the par-72, 5846-yard course to tally a four-day score of 1216. With their 72-hole score, the Titans shattered the previous mark of 1271 set during the 2008 NCAA Championship.

Thorman, who held the individual lead at various points throughout the tournament, garnered All-American status with her top-10 finish. She earned a share of third as she set the program's 72-hole scoring record with a 293 (72-72-72-77). 

Fellow senior Lexi Onsrud (Normal, Ill.-University High) capped off a tremendous career with a tie for 17th. Onsrud carded her best round of the tournament on the final day, shooting a one-over 73 to tally a 72-hole total of 301.

Junior Jacque O'Neill (Harbor Springs, Mich.-Harbor Springs) closed out the tournament strong. She ultimately tied for 43rd at 310, a score which now ranks third-best in IWU's record book for 72 holes behind Thorman and Onsrud.

Rounding out Illinois Wesleyan were juniors Macy Ludwig (Effingham, Ill.-St. Anthony) and Jadyn Spinks (Bloomington, Ill.-University High). Ludwig earned a share of 58th, while Spinks took 69th.

Carnegie Mellon grabbed the team title behind a big final day, finishing with a score of 1187. Emory place second (1201) and Pomona-Pitzer nabbed third (1203). Medalist honors went to Alison Takamiya of  George Fox, who finished with a score of 288. 

The end of the season marks the end of an era for the Titan women's golf program. Together, Thorman, Onsrud, Ludwig, O'Neill, and Spinks played over 71 rounds and pushed the program to new heights under the direction of head coach Patrick Freeman. The group broke countless program team and individual records, brought home two College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin titles, and won countless tournaments.
