Baseball Falls in Late Innings to Elmhurst

Three-game series against North Park this weekend

ELMHURST, Ill. - After a tough loss the day prior, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team was not able to bounce back in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin matchup against Elmhurst University, Wednesday, May 1. IWU dips to 22-13 overall and 11-7 in the conference while EU moves to 10-26, and 4-13 in the league.

After an uneventful first inning, the Titans started the scoring off early in the top of the second to be the first to put runs on the board. Sophomore Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) started IWU with a single out to right field. During an at bat, Flagg stole second to push himself into a better scoring opportunity. Sophomore Tommy Willard (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) was able to hammer one out to center field giving Flagg ample time to run home for the first run of the game.

Illinois Wesleyan continued to show strong at bats headed into the top of the fourth starting with freshman John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) singling to left field. With Flagg next in the box, he was able to send the ball out to center field for a single, advancing Ferraro to second. Junior William Duff (Western Springs, Ill.-St. Ignatius) grounded out to first but was able to move teammates Ferraro and Flagg to second and third. Sophomore Jimmy Martin (Western Springs, Ill.-Fenwick) grounded out to shortstop but the knock gave Ferraro enough time to cross the plate giving the Titans a 2-0 lead.

The Bluejays were able to answer in the bottom of the fourth with one run as the Green and White held onto the slight lead, 2-1. EU scored one more in the bottom of the fifth to tie it up 2-2.

Ferraro started the sixth with a single to right center followed by a single from Flagg shortly after to get both on base with no outs. Junior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) reached on a fielder's choice, as Flagg was thrown out at second but advancing Ferraro to third. Martin was able to singled to center field bringing Ferraro home. Figus scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) to advance IWU's lead to 4-2.

Senior Dino Biggers (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North) ripped his second home run of the season advancing the score to 5-2 in favor of the Titans.

The game took a turn, however, when EU managed to put up eight runs on IWU in the seventh and eighth innings stealing away with the 10-5 victory after the top of the ninth.

The Titans are set to play in a three-game series against North Park University Friday-Saturday, May 3-4. Friday's doubleheader will be played at North Park in Chicago, Ill. with games at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. while Saturday's game is set for a 4 p.m. start.
