Baseball Splits with North Park

Senior day game starts at 3 p.m. tomorrow

CHICAGO -  The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team split a twin bill with College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin foe North Park University, Friday, May 3. IWU moves to 23-14, and 12-7 in the CCIW, clinching the third-place spot for the conference tournament. North Park sits at 27-11, and 15-4 in the league. Tomorrow's game, along with the Millikin-Wheaton game will determine the CCIW Regular Season Champion and top seed in the upcoming tournament, as Millikin sits atop the league with a record of 15-3 in conference contests.

Game One: IWU 0, NPU 10
Both teams remained scoreless through the second frame but North Park got two runs in the bottom of the third to start off the scoring. The Vikings continued their momentum in the bottom of the fourth with four more runs to build their lead to 6-0.

Three more innings were scoreless on both sides, before  NPU tacked on four runs in the bottom of the eighth to run-rule the Titans and end the first game, 10-0.

Freshman Jack Novak (Mokena, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East) went 1-for-1, with a two-bagger. Not far behind Novak were freshman Michaeal Stupavsky (Quincy, Ill.-Quincy Notre Dame) and sophomore Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) who each went 1-for-2 during the first game.

Senior Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) saw his record dip to 1-2 for the season as he was the starting pitcher on the bump in game one, and totaled three strikeouts in four innings.

Game Two: IWU 5, NPU 4
IWU started off strong in game two with a run in the top of the first. Sophomore Tommy Willard (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) got the Titans rolling with his leadoff single to left field. After a groundout from freshman John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) advanced Willard to second, senior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) clobbered an RBI double to right field for IWU's first run of the day.

The score remained the same all the way into the fifth inning, where junior Justin Gadomksi (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) singled to right-center, driving the first pitch he saw. Sophomore Jimmy Martin (Western Springs, Ill.-Fenwick) then slapped one into left field for a two-bagger, while Gadomski trotted home to double the Titan lead, 2-0.

North Park did not let up as the Vikings put up two runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie up the game, 2-2, into the late innings.

The level score carried into the ninth, as Flagg reached first on an error by the North Park shortstop. Senior Dino Biggers (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville North) walked to advance Flagg to second before Willard ripped one to center field advancing Biggers to third and bringing home Flagg. Ferraro singled one up the middle to score Willard and Biggers and extend the IWU lead to three, 5-2.

Illinois Wesleyan's insurance runs courtesy of Ferraro's clutch knock proved important as North Park played two in the bottom of the ninth before IWU escaped with a 5-4 triumph.

Junior Dalen Banks (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) earned the win, bringing his record to 6-3 on the season. Banks pitched for seven innings and struck out five.

Junior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) went 2-for-2 followed by Martin and Gadomski both going 2-for-4. Tomhave, Martin, and Perona each had one double.

Tomorrow's game against North Park has been bumped up to a 3 p.m. first pitch as a result of precipitation in the forecast later in the day. Senior day festivities will start 15 minutes before game time.
