DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team took down Millikin University in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin clash, winning 6-3 Saturday, April 6. With the win, IWU ups its record to 9-4 (2-0 CCIW), while the Big Blue fall to 1-2 overall, and 0-1 in league action.
IWU swept paired play to jump out to a strong advantage in the match. Sophomore Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) and senior Ryan McCoy (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Rolling Meadows) kicked off doubles play with an 8-7(4) victory at the top spot. In the No. 2 slot, sophomore Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wyo.-Phillips Exeter Academy) and junior Zeke Cross (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) picked up the win with a score of 8-4. The Titans were awarded the win at No. 3 doubles due to default.
In singles action, Turnbull picked up the win at No. 1 singles, taking his sets 7-5, 6-2. Cross and sophomore Griffin Hammond (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) earned the wins at No. 5 and 6 singles, respectively, on defaults.
Illinois Wesleyan returns home, as the Titans host North Central College Friday, April 12. The CCIW contest will begin at 4:30 p.m. at Evergreen Racquet Club.
