Baseball Falls to Blackburn

Elmhurst up next tomorrow, May 1

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team fell to non-conference Blackburn College Tuesday, April 30 in a 7-5 battle between the two. IWU falls to 22-12 while the Beavers move to a 5-31 record.

IWU started off strong with a walk from the leadoff center fielder, senior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech). Perona swiped second during junior Justin Gadomski's (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) before taking third with junior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) at the dish. An errant throw from the catcher sailed down the left field line, allowing Perona to jog home for the 1-0 lead.

The Beavers brought one run in in the top of the third and then one more in the top of the fourth, BC took one more run in the top of the fifth, leading 3-1.

Freshman John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.- Oak Park River Forest) started off with a hit for the Titans in the bottom of the sixth to get IWU rolling again. After a sacrifice bunt from senior Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbrook South), Ferraro advanced to second. Sophomore Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) hit a two-bagger deep to left field to run Ferraro in, trimming the Blackburn lead to 3-2.

The Beavers had a crazy top of the seventh inning scoring three more to bring Blackburn's lead to 6-2.

Illinois Wesleyan kept the game close in the bottom of the seventh scoring three more runs. Pinch hitter Jimmy Martin (Western Springs, Ill.-Fenwick) took a walk to start the inning, with a perfect bunt from Perona putting two on. Ferraro took a walk to push bases loaded when Cyrus hit a clutch hit to right field to drive in both Martin and Perona. Pinch runner Michael Passarelli (Chicago, Ill.-De La Salle) helped score one more on a wild pitch to pull IWU within one, 6-5.

Blackburn got a run back though, pushing its lead back to a two-run cushion, 7-5, before Illinois Wesleyan ran out of steam.

IWU had six pitchers on the bump today with senior Aiden Smith (Marengo, Ill.-Marengo) taking the loss moving his record now to 0-2. Perona and Flagg tied for game highs ending 2-for-4, totaling two runs and two doubles between them both.

Illinois Wesleyan will take a trip to Elmhurst, Ill. tomorrow, Wednesday, May 1 for a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin single game. First pitch at Butterfield Park is set for 4 p.m. You can find the live stats and live stream on the IWUsports.com baseball page under the schedule.
