Women’s Lacrosse Slays Vikings on Senior Day

Titans secure spot in CCIW Tournament

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Having full control the entire game, the Illinois Wesleyan University women's lacrosse team sailed smoothly past Augustana College, winning 22-2, on a Senior Day special Saturday, April 27. With the win, the Titans improve to 9-7 overall, and 4-2 in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin action, and secure a spot in the CCIW Tournament. Augie dipped to 3-10 overall, and 1-5 in league play to close out its season.

Illinois Wesleyan honored seniors Britney Maldonado (Hoffman Estates, Ill.-James B. Conant) and Hannah Trousdale (Mt. Prospect, Ill.-Hoffman Estates) prior to the start of the game, with both putting on stellar performances in their final game inside Tucci Stadium.

Maldonado led the offense with a 10-point showing, coming off an even split of five goals and five assists. Junior Mia Fiandaca (St. Charles, Ill.-St. Charles North) put on a scoring show, finishing with a game-high seven goals. Fellow junior Avery Setzler (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) matched her career-high with six points in the contest, coming on a trio of goals and assists. Six additional Titans scored in the offensive affair.

Holding a 19-9 advantage at the draw, Fiandaca led the pack with seven draw controls, while sophomore Sadie Newton (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) finished with five. Sophomore Devon Hanson (Waukesha, Wis.-Waukesha West) added three. Fiandaca also led the Green and White with seven ground balls, and seven caused turnovers, the latter of which tied her career-best.

Sophomore Sarah Riepe (Aurora, Ill.-St. Francis) also had a career-high day, as she notched six ground balls and caused turnovers apiece. Hanson and Trousdale added three caused turnovers each, as the senior set a new career-high in her final home game.

In goal for Illinois Wesleyan, junior Lizzie Rymarcsuk (Lake Zurich, Ill.-Saint Viator) recorded her fourth straight victory, as she made four saves, along with a pair of ground balls and caused turnovers, in 60 minutes between the posts.

Right off the opening draw, Maldonado hit Fiandaca on a cut to quickly crack the scoreboard, using just 20 seconds to do so. A few minutes later, Hanson caused a turnover, and Setzler scooped up the ground ball and found a wide-open Maldonado. The senior wasted no time, scoring her 100th career goal to up the Green and White's lead to two.

After an Augie timeout, Maldonado found Fountain for a goal before the Vikings could stop the run. Fiandaca notched back-to-back goals, and Maldonado and Hanson followed with goals of their own to close the first quarter out with the Titans leading 7-1.

Similar to the first quarter, Illinois Wesleyan struck quickly to open the second. Fiandaca won the draw, and quickly found Maldonado, who sent the ball right back to Fiandaca for a goal 14 seconds into the second. Off the draw following Fiandaca's goal, sophomore Anelise DiGiovanni (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township) hit Setzler to up the lead to eight with 14:36 left in the first half of action.

Getting in on the senior day fun, Trousdale capitalized on a woman-up, free position attempt to push the lead to nine. IWU was on the scoring end of three of the last four goals in the second quarter, taking a 13-2 lead into halftime.

Out of the half, Illinois Wesleyan once again scored off the opening draw. Setzler hit DiGiovanni 30 seconds into the period to push the lead to 12. The next five minutes went scoreless until Riepe buried a shot to make it a 15-2 game. IWU scored twice more to head into the final quarter of action.

The fourth quarter saw the Green and White score the only five goals in the final period, as the Titans cruised to a 22-2 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan awaits the final seeding of the CCIW Tournament. The semifinal contest will take place Wednesday, May 1.
