Softball Pops Off Against Pioneers on Senior Day

Titans sweep with run-rule wins

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team sent its seniors out with a run-rule sweep of Carroll University Saturday, April 27, on Senior Day at Inspiration Field. Illinois Wesleyan ended game one 8-0 victors before completing the sweep, 18-0. With the wins, IWU upped its record to 24-9 overall, and 10-2 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Carroll dropped to 11-25 (4-10 CCIW).

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 8, Carroll 0 (5 inn.)
After sophomore Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) took a pitch off the leg and stole second, junior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) dropped a run-scoring single into right field to give IWU an early lead.

A bases-loaded walk drawn by freshman Elyssa Stenger (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) doubled the Titan lead to 2-0 into the fourth, where Illinois Wesleyan tacked on another. Back-to-back one-out singles by Beckman and freshman Hailey Milgazo (Poway, Calif.-Poway) made way for an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia).

IWU pounced for five runs in the fifth to end the game early. A five-run rally all came with two outs and was started by a single by senior Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove), who promptly trotted into second with a delayed steal. A throwing error put Beckman aboard and scored Fontanetta. Milgazo followed with an RBI single, laced down the left field line, and scored on Kuhn's knock up the middle. A double to the left-center gap by Wissmiller plated Milgazo to up the lead to 6-0. A ball put in play by junior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) finished off the game as a pair of runs scored to give IWU the 8-0 victory.

Illinois Wesleyan finished with 11 hits in the game, with Milgazo posting a 3-for-3 showing. Kuhn and Wissmiller each went 2-for-4 in the contest, with Wissmiller driving in a team-best two.

Certa struckout three in a five-inning complete game effort that saw her move to 13-2 on the season.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 18, Carroll 0 (5 inn.)
The Titans' offense could not be stopped in game two, including a career game for senior Hope Yeoman (Lafayette, Ind.-William Henry Harrison). Yeoman, senior Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West), and Kuhn each homered in the lopsided win. Kuhn registered a career-high six RBIs, while Yeoman and Turner drove in five each.

Kuhn led the offense with a 4-for-5 showing that was a triple shy of the cycle. She finished with six RBIs, one off the program record, and scored three runs. The senior duo of Yeoman and Turner tallied five RBIs apiece. Yeoman went 2-for-3 with a double and her first career homer, while Turner cranked a grand slam in a 3-for-3 performance.

Sophomore Caroline Gatchell (Grayslake, Ill.-Carmel Catholic) tossed all five innings in the circle to move to 7-5 on the season. She limited the Pioneers to just two hits and struck out two.

The Green and White honored its six-person senior class of Yeoman, Priscilla Peek, Isabelle Piwowarczyk, Fontanetta, Maya Black, and Turner prior to first pitch of the twin bill.

Illinois Wesleyan enjoys some time off before heading on the road for its final two CCIW doubleheaders. The Titans return to action at Wheaton College Friday, May 3.
