Softball Spoils Senior Day in Wheaton

Titans earn pair of run-rule wins

WHEATON, Ill. - The bats came alive as the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team scored a pair of run-rule wins in a sweep of Wheaton College Friday, May 3. The Titans (26-9, 12-2 CCIW) spoiled the Thunder's (16-20, 5-11 CCIW) senior day with 8-0 and 9-1 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin wins.

Game One: Illinois Wesleyan 8, Wheaton 0 (6 inn.)
The Titans plated two runs in their first trip to the plate, culminating in a two-run single by junior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia).

An RBI groundout by sophomore Claire Post (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) jumped the lead to three, before IWU plated four in the fifth.

Khoury kickstarted things in the fifth with a leadoff single to left center and scooted into second on a sacrifice bunt. Freshman Elyssa Stenger (Bloomington, Ill.-Central Catholic) singled to load the bases with one away and senior Megan Fontanetta (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) lifted a sacrifice fly to right to run home Khoury. Sophomore Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) doubled down the left field line, scoring Stenger and freshman JD Dowling (Roselle, Ill.-Lake Park). A single by freshman Hailey Milgazo (Poway, Calif.-Poway) brought home Beckman, capping the four-run frame.

Wheaton appeared poised to crack the scoring column in the fifth, loading the bases with one out, but sophomore Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) locked in and escaped the jam to send the game to the sixth.

A double to the right-center gap by sophomore Casey Wissmiller (Bloomington, Ill.-Olympia) led off the sixth. Khoury singled to center to put runners on the corners and Dowling picked up an RBI groundout to push the lead to 8-0.

Certa threw a 1-2-3 sixth to finish off the victory as the sophomore pushed her record to 14-2 on the season. Certa limited the Thunder to three hits and recorded four strikeouts.

In all, the Green and White accrued 17 hits. Khoury led the offensive effort with a 4-for-4 showing with two runs driven in, while Beckman and Milgazo each went 3-for-4. Beckman tallied two RBIs, while Milgazo swiped three bases.

Game Two: Illinois Wesleyan 9, Wheaton 1 (5 inn.)
The Titan bats remained hot in game two, as IWU plated three first-inning runs. After sophomore Caroline Gatchell (Grayslake, Ill.-Carmel Catholic) opened the game with a 1-2-3 inning, Milgazo drew a one-out walk. Junior Jen Kuhn (Normal, Ill.-University High) drove in the game's first run with an RBI triple, before scoring on Wissmiller's RBI double.

Leading 3-1 into the bottom of the third, Kuhn belted a solo homer over the fence in left to push IWU back ahead by three, 4-1.

The Green and White finished off the game and ultimately the sweep with a five-run fifth. Kuhn began the frame with a single and Wissmiller followed with a base knock of her own. With runners on second and third after Khoury's sacrifice bunt, senior Bailey Turner (Normal, Ill.-Normal West) drove in a run on a single. Post earned a free pass to load the bases, which was followed by a two-run, pinch-hit single by senior Maya Black (Springfield, Ill.-Glenwood). Beckman polished off the game with a two-run two-bagger down the left field line that scored Black and Dowling to secure the 9-1 victory.

Gatchell picked up the win with a five-inning complete game. She struck out two with just three hits allowed as she moved to 8-5 on the year.

Offensively, Kuhn went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs, while finishing a double shy of the cycle. Turner also posted a 3-for-3 game with two RBIs, while Beckman drove in a pair in a 2-for-4 effort.

Illinois Wesleyan is back in action tomorrow, May 4, with a doubleheader at Augustana College. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
