Baseballs Win Streak Snapped by Millikin

Non-conference game against Blackburn set for Tuesday

DECATUR, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team made the short trip to Decatur, Ill. Saturday, April 27 as the Titans competed against Millikin University in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin doubleheader. IWU went 0-2 with the Big Blue bringing their overall record to 22-11 and 11-5 in the CCIW, while Millikin moves to 22-12 and 12-3 in CCIW action. The Green and White fall to third in the CCIW with Millikin and North Park sitting at first and second, respectively. 

Game One: Titans 0, Big Blue 12
MU only scored in two innings with an early lead in the bottom of the first nabbing two runs to lead 2-0. 

IWU had its chance to get on the board in the top of the fourth as junior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg), junior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North), and sophomore Jack Flagg (River Forest, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) notched back-to-back-to-back singles to have bases loaded with just one out. Unfortunately, a double play ended the half inning. IWU produced a 1-2-3 bottom of the fourth before Millikin found its momentum in the fifth. 

The Big Blue managed to score 10 more runs in the bottom of the fifth as the Titans made two costly errors and let all but one run go unearned. 

The Big Blue outhit the Titans 8-4 while IWU was hit with two errors in the game. Gadomski went 2-for-2 to pace the offense.

The starting pitcher on the bump was sophomore Will Davidsmeier (Virgina, Ill.-Beardstown) earning his first loss of the season to bring his record to 5-1. He totaled six strikeouts in four innings. Seniors Alex Smith (Normal, Ill.-Normal West), Josh Ralston (Frankfort, Ill.-Lincoln-Way East), and Aiden Smith (Marengo, Ill.-Marengo) each pitched for an inning or less and totaled four combined strikeouts.

Game Two: IWU 1, MU 9
Millikin grabbed a 4-0 lead early as IWU was left playing from behind into the third.

The Titans finally started to see some hits in the top of the sixth started with Gadomski singling to left field. With a walk from Woltman, Gadomski advanced to second in ready scoring position for freshman John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) up to bat. A montrorous hit from Ferraro into right field sent Gadomski flying through third with an easy touch at home plate to bring the Titans its first run of the day. 

The Titans gave up three more runs in the bottom of the seventh and two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to bring the MU lead 9-1. 

Junior Dalen Banks (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) pitched for 5.2 innings and totaled 110 pitches with three strikeouts. As the starting pitcher on the bump, Banks took the loss bringing his overall record to 5-3. 

Ferraro went 3-for-4 in game two with a team high of the day, he also collected the only RBI of the two games. 

Illinois Wesleyan will host Blackburn College on Tuesday, April 30 for a non-conference bout at Horenberger Field. Game is slated to start at 6 p.m.
