Men’s Tennis Hosts Wheaton for Senior Day

Action set to begin at 3 p.m. at Evergreen Racquet Club

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University men's tennis team will host Wheaton College in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin clash for its regular season finale Saturday, April 27. The Titans (9-8, 2-4 CCIW) will honor seniors Joshua Cortez (Chicago, Ill.-Notre Dame College Prep) and Jordan Sibley-Diggs (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park & River Forest) prior to the start of the match. 

Illinois Wesleyan enters the contest off a 9-0 loss at Carthage College Saturday, April 20. In doubles action, the No. 2 doubles pair of sophomore Ben Vigneri (Casper, Wyo.-Phillips Exeter Academy) and junior Zeke Cross (Springfield, Ill.-Springfield) fell 8-2 while freshman Thad Dillow (Effingham, Ill.-Effingham) and sophomore Griffin Hammond (Metamora, Ill.-Metamora Township) had a similar 8-2 showing in their paired match. Vigneri nearly took his match at No. 2 singles into a tiebreaker but ultimately fell to his Firebird opponent with set scores of 7-5 and 7-6. 

IWU and Wheaton will meet on the courts for the 42nd time, with the long series dating back to 1990. The Thunder hold a commanding 37-4 advantage in the series, and took the last meeting 8-1 April 1, 2023. Then-freshman Ian Turnbull (Bloomington, Ill.-Bloomington) picked up the lone win on the day for the Titans, earning a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles. Wheaton enters the contest 12-6 overall, 2-3 in CCIW play, and most recently fell, 8-1, Wednesday, April 24 to North Central College.
