Shamhart’s Gem Sends Titans Past Firebirds

Eastern Illinois game originally scheduled for tomorrow, April 24, canceled

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team used a complete-game combined shutout from sophomore Cole Shamhart (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) and senior Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbard South) to blank Carthage College, 4-0, at Horenberger Field Tuesday evening, April 23. The duo combined for 17 strikeouts as IWU improved to 22-9 on the year and 11-3 in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin. Carthage saw its record dive to 20-10 overall, 8-6 in league play.

Shamhart threw the first six innings, striking out a career-high 12, while Cyrus tallied five strikeouts while pitching the final three innings. The combined 17 Ks are tied for third-most in program history and are the most by IWU's pitching staff since fanning 17 against North Central April 18, 2014. With the win, Shamhart bumped his record to 8-0 on the year, while Cyrus collected his second save of the season.

With both pitchers dealing, the teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth inning, where the Titans scored the first run of the game. Sophomore Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) started the Titans off with a single to left field. A stolen base for Gurgone got him into scoring position at second, setting the table for an RBI single to center by senior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech).

With Carthage still scoreless, the Green and White registered two runs in the bottom of the sixth to open up a 3-0 lead. Junior Tyler Woltman (Wheaton, Ill.-Wheaton North) kept the bats rolling with a single up the middle. Freshman John Philip Ferraro (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) singled to left field, advancing Woltman to second. Cyrus doubled to right center to score Woltman and senior Michael Passarelli (Chicago, Ill.-De La Salle).

With Shamhart's day complete after six string innings of work, a diving catch from Perona gave Cyrus a quick out in his relief appearance. Cyrus went on to strike out the next batter before a fly ball to center completed a 1-2-3 inning to send IWU back to the plate.

Junior Cade Tomhave (Pittsfield, Ill.-Pittsfield) singled and moved to second on a Gurgone sacrifice bunt. In the next at bat, Perona hit a fly out to center field deep enough for Tomhave to slide into third. Junior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) capitalized with a runner just down the third-base line with a single through the 5-6 hole to score Tomhave and push the Titan lead to 4-0.

In all, IWU outhit Carthage, 9-6. Ferraro finished the game 2-for-3 with Perona not far behind him finishing 2-for-4. Cyrus finished the game with two RBIs. while Gadomski and Perona added one apiece.

With tomorrow's game at Eastern Illinois canceled, Illinois Wesleyan will next compete Saturday, April 27, with a doubleheader at Millikin University. First pitch of the twin bill is slated for 12 p.m. at the Workman Family Baseball Field.
