Men’s Lacrosse Downs Bluejays on Senior Day to Clinch Share of CCIW Title

Titans only remaining undefeated team in the CCIW

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – After a thrilling 15-13 victory over Elmhurst University on senior day, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team is now the only remaining undefeated team in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin as the Titans clinch at least a share of the CCIW Regular Season Championship title. IWU moves to 10-3, 4-0 in CCIW action while Elmhurst drops to 10-3 and 2-1 in the CCIW.

Sophomore Noah Dretzka (Delafield, Wis.-Kettle Moraine) and senior Trystan Seeley (Castle Rock, Colo.-Castle View) led IWU with five points apiece. Dretzka also had the team lead of three assists to go along with his two goals. Four Titans scored hat tricks against the Bluejays including Seeley, senior Gage Black (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap), junior Sam Weinberg (Highwood, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest), and freshman Jake Kahoun (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington). Junior Sam Skelton (Portland, Ore.-Franklin) led the team with four caused turnovers and had five scoops on the day. Junior Colin Tervo (West Linn, Ore.-West Linn) served nearly the whole game between the iron to be credited the win and move to 10-3 on the season. Tervo had nine saves while recording a team lead six ground balls.

IWU got going early, as Kahoun scored the first goal of the game in less than one minute from the starting whistle. The Titans' second goal came from Seeley who sniped one to the top corner of the net to give IWU the 2-1 edge. Dretzka dished to Weinberg just outside the crease before Black served up a man-up goal thanks to another Dretzka assist to move ahead 4-1. Elmhurst managed to put the score within one with a pair of goals but IWU answered back just 11 seconds later with a goal by Skelton to lead 5-3 heading into the second quarter.

IWU and Elmhurst traded goals to open the quarter before a six-minute stalemate. McHugh found Seeley breaking hard from his penalty release giving Seeley the open opportunity to rip a man-up goal to give the Titans the 7-4 advantage. Elmhurst's Eli Spence picked up another goal before the half's end to bring it within two at 7-5 in favor of the Green and White.

Elmhurst opened the second half with another goal before IWU scored three straight. Dretzka notched a man-up goal before quick ball movement from Seeley found Kahoun waiting just outside the crease to move the Titans ahead 9-6. Kahoun came back for another goal just 50 seconds later off a Bluejays turnover. Three straight goals by Elmhurst brought the Bluejays within one, 10-9, but a clutch goal by Seeley from Dretzka regained the two-point lead. Dretzka returned with an unassisted goal thirty seconds later to lead 12-9. With just over a minute left in the third quarter, Black scored to give IWU the 13-9 advantage heading into the final quarter.

Despite Elmhurst owning a 4-2 scoring run in the fourth quarter, Illinois Wesleyan's lead granted the buffer needed to still secure the 15-13 win over the Bluejays.

IWU hits the road for its last game of the regular season as the Green and White takes on Carroll University in Waukesha, Wis. next Saturday, April 27.
