Men’s Lacrosse Caps Off Undefeated Regular Season in Waukesha

CCIW Tournament kicks off Wednesday, May 1

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Solidifying its sixth straight undefeated College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin regular season with a dominating 29-4 win over Carroll University, the Illinois Wesleyan University men's lacrosse team claimed the outright win of the CCIW regular season title. IWU moves to a nine-game win streak for an 11-3 and 5-0 CCIW record while Carroll falls to 6-10 and 0-5 in the CCIW.

Leading IWU to its 37th consecutive regular season CCIW win was freshman Jake Kahoun (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) with a career-high six points on five goals and an assist. Twenty-one Titans got in on the scoring action with 12 scoring two or more points in IWU's final regular season game. Freshman Reese Hack (Minneapolis, Minn.-The Blake School) had a team-high four ground balls while eight Titans had a caused turnover. Freshman Michael Rocco (Libertyville, Ill.-Libertyville) went 16-for-24 at the X. Seniors Alex Oximana (Seattle, Wash.-Bishop Blanchet) and Sam Scott (Worthington, Ohio-Thomas Worthington) split time in the net as Oximana recorded six saves in the opening half while Scott served the second and had two saves.

The IWU defense forced an early Carroll turnover on a clock violation, putting the ball in sophomore Noah Dretzka's (Delafield, Wis.-Kettle Moraine) stick who would take it to the goal for the Titans to lead 35 seconds in. Just 15 seconds later, Kahoun dished to freshman Timothy McHugh (Orland Park, Ill.-Mount Carmel) for a goal. With a lot of time left to play in the first quarter, the Green and White would go to work for ten more goals to lead 12-0. Kahoun secured at least a hat trick in the opening 15 minutes while eight Titans scored in the first quarter. IWU dominated the first quarter possessions with 24 shots to the Pioneers' three, but with 12 seconds left on the clock, Carroll broke the first period shutout with a goal by Brady Mollsen.

A quick dish from McHugh to junior Sam Weinberg (Highwood, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) gave IWU its first goal of the second quarter. McHugh would come around for a wrap-around goal thanks to a junior Jake Gisi (Wentzville, Mo.-Chaminade College Prep) assists to put IWU up 14-1. Carroll managed to keep IWU scoreless for two minutes before the Titans strung together goals by junior John Kittoe (Waunakee, Wis.-Waunakee) and senior Brendan Baumgarten (Peoria, Ill.-Dunlap) to lead 17-1. Quick ball movement from the Green and White offense disrupted Carroll's defense enough to pull the Pios goalie completely out of the net as junior Bobby Conroy (St. Louis, Mo.-St. Louis University High) took advantage of the open goal to give IWU the 18-1 advantage. Carroll broke up the Titans' scoring run with a goal with five minutes left in the half but IWU would pick up two more goals to take a 20-2 edge into halftime.

Sophomore Andrew Ortega (Austin, Texas-Westlake) led the Green and White in the third quarter, scoring two of the Titans' six goals and assisting on another. Carroll picked up its third goal of the game in the third quarter as IWU maintained a 26-3 advantage.

Rocco kicked off the final quarter by winning the faceoff and taking it straight to the crease for an uncontended goal to lead 27-3. Freshman Jarrett Brunson (Marshall, Wis.-Sun Prairie East) upped it to 28-3 thanks to a dish Baumgarten. Carroll snuck in another goal before freshman Nate Pound (Theinsville, Wis.-Homestead) capped off the 29-3 victory off a senior Logan Gelling (St. Michael, Minn.-Benilde St. Margaret's) assist.

IWU will host Carthage College for a CCIW semifinal game Wednesday, May 1 at 7:30 p.m. inside Tucci Stadium.
