Baseball Takes on Carthage for Sunday Clash

Titans and Firebirds meet for the first time this season

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - After a road win, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team continues on the road in a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin matchup against the Firebirds of Carthage College. The Titans will travel to Kenosha, Wis. Sunday, April 21 for a 1 p.m. game. IWU is currently 20-9 overall and 9-3 in conference, while Carthage gears up for a two games against conference foe North Park on Friday and Saturday before playing the Green and White. Carthage currently sits at 18-8 overall and 6-4 in the CCIW. 

There is quite a lengthy history between the two teams as they have played each other 110 times dating back to 1989. Both teams have been fairly evenly matched throughout the years with IWU having a slight upper hand with an all-time record of 58-52. The Titans have won five straight against the Firebirds, including a sweep in last season's doubleheader April 7, 2023. IWU won game one, 4-2, before securing the sweep, 10-5.

The Firebirds last game was Tuesday, April 16 where they took on fourth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Carthage was run-ruled in seven innings by the Warhawks, 16-4. 

The Green and White are coming off of another CCIW victory against Wheaton College, April 17, where the Titans had no trouble scoring for the entirety of the game pulling out a 9-2 win over the Thunder. Sophomore Cole Shamhart (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park River Forest) was the starting pitcher on the bump, tossing five innings with eight strikeouts. The Oak Park, Ill. native has a season ERA of 2.64 thus far, and has totaled 47 strikeouts on the season. 

Senior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) is at the top of the team leaderboard for batting average with a .402. The senior totals 102 at bats with 41 hits on the season and was just recently named CCIW Hitter of the Week Monday, April 15. 

Another to note is junior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg), who currently sits second in batting average at .393. Gadomski has 46 hits on the season and a whopping 28 RBIs. Combined, Gadomski and Perona total for 62 runs on the season. 

IWU sits second in the conference standings ahead of the weekend with a 9-3 CCIW record, North Park leads with a record of 10-1 but the Vikings and the Titans have yet to meet this season.
