Certa & Khoury Sweep CCIW Weekly Softball Awards

Titans travel to North Central Thursday, April 18

NAPERVILLE, Ill. - The Illinois Wesleyan University softball team swept the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin weekly awards Monday afternoon, April 15, as sophomore Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) and junior Ava Khoury (Columbia, Ill.-Columbia) were tabbed the CCIW's Pitcher and Hitter of the Week, respectively. It is the second weekly honor of the year for Certa, while it is the first for Khoury this season and the third in her career.

Behind the play of Certa and Khoury, IWU jumped out to a 3-1 start to conference play. The Titans split with Millikin, April 10, before sweeping Elmhurst, April 13.

Certa posted a 2-0 record in the circle, tossing 16.0 innings with eight strikeouts and just one run allowed over two starts. She began the week with a six-hit shutout against Millikin as IWU topped MU, 6-0. Certa followed that with a nine-inning complete game against Elmhurst, where the Titans came away with a 4-1 extra-inning victory. She fanned six Bluejays and allowed just five hits.

Khoury started conference play strong, hitting .417 with five hits in 12 at bats. Khoury's best game of the week came in a 2-for-2 showing in game two against Elmhurst, which saw the junior belt two homers and drive in three. She added two walks over the week as well, as she extended her reached-base streak to six games.

Illinois Wesleyan travels to Naperville, Ill. this Thursday, April 18, for a doubleheader at North Central College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
