Certa earns second selection, Beckman nabs first

LOUISVILLE, Ill. -
Seniors Gianna Certa (Third Lake, Ill.-Grayslake North) and Anna Beckman (Bourbonnais, Ill.-Bishop McNamara) pulled in National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Region distinctions for the Illinois Wesleyan University softball team Friday, May 15. IWU was one of two College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin programs included in the organization's announcement.


The CCIW Pitcher of the Year, Certa collected an all-region award for the second time in her career. She boasted a 13-4 record in the circle this season with an earned run average of 2.00 over 129.1 innings. The senior righty struck out a team-leading 98 and threw 12 complete games. Certa has dazzled all season long, tossing seven shutouts with a no-hitter to her name. The Third Lake, Ill. native was a three-time CCIW Pitcher of the Week pick and was included in the NFCA's top weekly performances multiple times. Her 13 wins paced the pitching staff, while her two saves tied for the team-best.

Beckman earned the honor for the first time in her career. The speedy and dynamic cleanup hitter, Beckman batted .368 on the year with 46 hits over 125 at bats. She leads the team with an on-base percentage of .460 aided by her team-high 22 walks. The Bourbonnais, Ill. native scored 35 runs, drove in 19, and swiped 23 bases. Beckman churned out multiple hits in a game 14 times, while emerging as a Gold Glove candidate defensively. 

Illinois Wesleyan concluded its season with a 31-15 overall record. The Titans won the CCIW regular season and tournament titles, while advancing to the regional championship in the NCAA Tournament.
