Baseball Out-Performs Scots

Conference action to resume Wednesday

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - After Saturday's two-game sweep of Augustana College, the Illinois Wesleyan University baseball team has continued its win streak by taking on nonconference opponent Monmouth College, Sunday, April 14. IWU has shot to 19-9 overall and Monmouth has dropped to 11-12.

Senior Louis Perona (Chicago, Ill.-Lane Tech) sent the first pitch of the game straight to left center for his first two-bagger of the game. Junior Justin Gadomski (Schaumburg, Ill.-Schaumburg) was second in the lineup and took the ball into right field to bring Perona home in the bottom of the first.

The Scots were quick to respond to the Titans' run with its first batter up in the top of the second hitting a home run to tie it up.

To start off the bottom of the second, junior Tristan Figus (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Buffalo Grove) was walked before sophomore Jimmy Gurgone (Mokena, Ill.-St. Laurence) singled to left. With two runners on base, sophomore Tommy Willard (Downer Grove, Ill.-Downers Grove South) laid down a successful bunt, making it to first with enough time while forcing a throwing error by the Scots pitcher running. On the error, both Figus and Gurgone made it home with Willard advancing to third. Senior Dino Biggers (Naperville, Ill.-Naperville Central) was walked and Perona was hit by a pitch to enter Gadomski with bases loaded. Gadomski hit a sacrifice fly into center field to earn one more run for the Titans and take the lead 4-1.

The Green and White continued its scoring streak in the bottom of the third inning when senior Jacob Cyrus (Glen Ellyn, Ill.-Glenbrook South) ran in on a Gurgone double after he was placed on base with a fielder's choice play. Willard then hit a sacrifice fly out to right field to bring Figus home to run up the score 6-1.

The Scots started to make a slight comeback with another homerun from the first baseman bringing the score 6-2 with a Titan lead.

Staying scoreless in the bottom of the fourth, IWU picked up its fire from the innings prior and scored three more, running in Figus and Gurgone after an error made by the catcher. One more run was scored in the inning by the Green and White when there was a sacrifice fly from Gurgone to run Willard in.

Titans kept the lead into the eighth but let the Scots come back with a run-in and a grand slam from the first baseman, closing in on the runs gap to make the score 9-8 in favor of the Titans.

The top of the ninth saw three quick outs to end the game 9-8 with the Titans on top.

IWU pitchers allowed eight hits today and totaled a combined five strikeouts. Senior Luke Uhwat (Spring Grove, Ill.-Richmond-Burton) was the starting pitcher on the bump tallying three strikeouts, he also received his first win of the season. Junior Luke Schwab (Downers Grove, Ill.-Downer Grove South) was credited with the save.

The Titans take a three-day break before they play their next College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin game Wednesday, April 17 against Wheaton College. The Green and White will travel to Wheaton, Ill. to play at 6 p.m. inside Pfund Stadium.
